What the sharks should do with Evander Kane

Created by: nintendofan721
Team: 2021-22 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 29, 2021
Published: Nov. 29, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Keep him down in the AHL for the year if no one claims him, and then buy him out once the season is over. If anyone trades for him then that will make them the most stupid GM in the league. Kane is not deserving to play at an NHL level and no one should want him on their team. The Sharks are better off buying him out instead of retaining salary in a trade because either way, they’ll still have to pay him for years to come. And if anyone then signs him, again, that will make them the most stupid GM in the league. Clearly the players do not get along with him and that would be the case for any of the 32 teams. No smart GM should have any level of interest in him.

Especially considering the fact that Kane’s buyout numbers are not the worst we’ve seen. Looks like it’s $1.67M for the 3 years after his contract ends. Not great, but that’s manageable.

The Sharks want him gone, you are right. Regardless of if Kane deserves to be on an NHL roster or not, San Jose's best bet is retaining 50% on him because it helps them more with the cap. Either way, he is off the team, but retaining is simply the better option.

So who’s the trading partner paying the other portion?

I’d take a flyer on Kane to the oilers if can make the money make sense. He’s a guy that has a shady history but on ice no question he can help a team win and be a huge impact.

Exactly correct - that’s why he won’t be traded.

The guy who made this post is saying that Kane should not get traded because he does not deserve to be on a roster.. I am saying that if a team is willing to take him at 50%, you make that trade. If no team wants him, then obviously you cant move him.

I think the play is to let him sit and think about his actions for the next 9 months, then sign him to a $1M deal after the Sharks buy him out. People can change, but change often needs to be incentivized.

But eating half saves them an average of 100k in cap for 3 years and no 1.667 million cap hit for 3 years after either.

I didn’t say it was better to buy him out, but if nobody bites (apologies for the Sharks pun) then retaining half isn’t even an option.

I don’t think he can afford to only sign a one million dollar contract after the buyout might have to go play a season or two in the Khl if that’s all nhl teams are willing to offer.

He still gets paid after being bought out, you know. Two-thirds of his salary, so he'll be getting $12.6M over the next 6 years from the Sharks if bought out next summer.

Ya but I’m thinking that 1/3 he’s loosing will be very tough on him financially considering the debts he has.

He pretty much has to declare personal bankruptcy, doesn't he? Then any new contract will be a fresh start.

I have no idea I remember seeing something about him taking a loan against his current contract. It’s hard to say how that will play out really no idea of state laws and bankruptcy.
