I guess the American education system don't teach you about sample sizes

Guess the Canadian education system didn't teach you about being facetious

We can sit here and cherry pick stats all day long to try to prove our points. Fiala is a first line player, but we'd obviously adding for him in a hypothetical Pettersson trade.

Petterson last 3 years 5 on 5 P/60
68 GP 2.6 P/60
26 GP 2.5 P/60
23 GP .5 P/60
Weighted Average P/60 2.16

Fiala last 3 years 5 on 5 P/60
64 GP 2.6 P/60
50 Gp 2.3 P/660

weighted average P/60 2.47
so fiala over the last 3 years has been better than EP at 5 on 5 by about .3 points per 60

Add Rossi, Eriksson Ek, and a 1st instead of the 2nd and the Canucks consider it

Most Common Linemates
Fiala: Parise, Koivu, Johansson, Hartman, Bonino, Gaudreau, Hartman
Boeser: Pettersson, Miller, Hoglander

Since 2019-20, Fiala has the same output as Boeser despite less time, which means he scores at a higher rate. He drives play better and creates better offensive opportunities for himself and his linemates. He has a more positive impact on the game and contributes more to team success. He does all of this despite having significantly worse linemates.

The two teams have had similar PP% during that time, and Fiala and Boeser produce similar output (total points) on the PP as well, despite the fact that Boeser has averaged 1:03 more on the PP per game during that time. That means he gets 38% more PP time than Fiala does, and produces the same number of points on an equally competent power play.

This has been really fun, let's do it again some time.

Sooooo Fiala plays 2nd line minutes, scores at a 2nd line rate, and has 2nd line level line mates.

Cool

And he's better than Boeser, who plays first line minutes, has first line linemates, and scores at a third line rate, yes.

Sweet okay he is better than Boeser. I mean honestly we’re not even arguing here. We both agree he is a good player. Calling him a 1st line forward or 2nd line forward is meaningless at this point. He plays 2nd line minutes and scores at a 2nd line rate. Could he play on a first line? Yeah obviously. Should he be the best player on your first line? No of course not.

He doesn't score at a second line rate though. He scores at a first line rate while playing with third liners. If you don't agree then you're just incorrect. That's all there is to it. he's in the top 50 for those scoring metrics over that period. There are 96 guys playing on the first line league wide. Just about every single one of them has a much easier time on the ice than Fiala does, given the linemates they all play with.

Okay honestly man I’m not trying to argue here. We can call him a first liner then. That’s fine. He’s really good, obviously.

My main point is Pettersson’s age and potential as being a franchise centre outweighs the value of Dumba+Fiala, particularly given their age and contract statuses and their respective roles on their team. Whether Fiala is a 2nd line player or 1st line player it doesn’t really matter

I don't care about the value, I never did. I don't expect Vancouver to trade Pettersson until they have to. You called Fiala a second liner, I wanted to see the argument for it. But now I'm glad we can agree he's clearly a first line player. Moving forward, knowing the facts about Fiala and giving him his proper due will help conversations go more smoothly, rather than having Canucks fans baselessly bashing Fiala over and over again.

Be honest with yourself. You know it'll still happen.

That said, I applaud your effort though. cheers

They are conditional picks, max going back to wild is a 2024 1st, and thats if both re-sign, if one of them re-signs its a 2nd, VAN could turn around and trade both of them for 1sts if they wanted to.

Wow that’s still bad
