Overpay. He's highly overrated. Hasn't became the Franchise player he was expected to be when drafted.

This feels similar to the Draisaitl contract. While it may not look great when it gets signed, it has the potential to be a huge steal in the near future. I do hope Hughes lives up to that potential, but if he doesn’t this could turn sour quickly. Looks like a good contract, but we’ll only know how good it actually is after a few seasons of development from Jack.

This is a massive risk, especially given that Hughes has underperformed Hischier, relatively speaking. Maybe it'll pay off, but giving him this much this early is insanely risky.

Could Hughes and Hischier be Tom Fitzgerald's undoing perhaps? Also, I think the Suzuki deal is much more favourable than this

Not entirely sold on him being worth this now, and though he would get something more in line with MacKinnon's second contract in the upper 6MM - lower 7MM range. This is fine though

If Hughes continues on his current trajectory, this is a decent contract. Cant hate it for the Devils and the 8 years is fantastic.

Not yet. Give it time, he has shown that he has all of the tools to do so. Not everyone is a 1C straight off the hop

People who complained about Suzuki's contract because "we only player 100 games and proved nothing yet" better be choking on this one.

55 NHL career games. 64M. Jeez.

I agree it's a gamble but where do you get 55 NHL games from? He has 119...

I wonder how this gets compared to Suzuki's contract. Everyone said Suzuki's was awful and they are very comparable

People here were mostly fine with the Suzuki contract. Think the consensus on Hughes' contract is more divided.

Right now I'm more sold on Suzuki being worth 7 million than Hughes being worth 8 million, but Hughes has a higher ceiling.

Even with the 8 yr deal, would Hughes be able to see the rebuild get completed ?

It's a bit of a risk, but if Hughes can continue to impress over the next few weeks, I think this will look like a steal by year 3 or 4.

Regardless, it's great for the Devils to get him locked up for 8 years.

20 career goals. Career high 11 goals. = 8yr $64mm contact. Wow.

Huge risk that this blows up in NJ's face.

LOL What an overpayment! Good luck with that one.... The NJ slewfooters will be loving his deal in year 5 when he has more IL visits than 50 point seasons.

Hughes will make $500,000 less a year for the next three years than what Draisitl makes! Let that sink in!

Massive overpay. A sharp GM would have done $3.5 x 3 yrs for his efforts to date. Hopefully it is a value deal for the Devils by year 3 or 4.

One thing for sure, from Hughes' standpoint he's getting a value deal for his Agent.

I just don't see the Draisaitl comparison:
GP: 191 G: 50 A: 85 Pts: 135 = 0.71 PPG
And coming off 16 Pts in 13 playoff games and Memorial Cup MVP Award 2 years earlier.

Hughes: 119-20-35-55 = 0.46 PG

I like the kid but based on his production this is an overpayment by far. They are paying him what they think he might produce which is not smart at this time. It's like Marner all over again.

lol that must be joke right? I know, he is N.1draft, but to this day he looks more like bust, than win. Definitelly not proved himself. Transition contract would suit him much better.

Great signing by Devils....and great for Hughes too.

I have found there are two types of Hughes detractors out there:
(1) people that never watch him play, just look at point totals, and conclude he is a bust
(2) people who view him as hockey's version of Justin Bieber.

For people that have watched him play, this contract is a good one.
He has dominated many stat categories (possession, passing, zone entries, takeaways, penalties drawn, etc).
That usually leads to bigger point numbers.

Also, he arrived in NJ at 5'10" maybe 145-150 lbs.
He is now 5'11" has added 15 lbs in each off-season, and if that continues, he will be 5'11" 190 lbs by the start of this contract.

This is an interesting one.
I think people are getting hung up over the actual dollars, and I get it but we need to remember that ever since Chia blew up the RFA market its been Armageddon. Toronto was famously the first to deal with the fallout and now other teams are too. Any notions of contract value from before need to be discarded as they no longer apply.
People looking at Hughes raw numbers might see a guy with few counting stats, although a good deal of that is obscured by the covid shortening of last season. Here is what they may be missing. The underlying metrics suggest that Hughes is on the verge of a massive breakout and that it has already started. He has been quietly fantastic and the results are only beginning to show on the scoresheet. Getting this done now could save millions if the breakout is as large as we think it may be. Hell even a basic eye test will tell you that the raw skill to be something great is there. It is a gamble, but that is how the RFA market is working right now.

Let me be clear, this is a massive gamble. A very, very risky one. but I think it will work out and I would make it too. Besides I have been saying for years now, if you're going to overpay someone, overpay the young stars.
