If only Devils fans responded to this poll, it'd be 95% "Yes."

Many of the same people that voted "No" for Hughes, probably voted "Yes" for Pettersson, who received nearly 95% "Yes" votes. If that poll were taken again today, I doubt it'd be over 50%. Stats can be very deceptive.

At the time of signing, Pettersson's career numbers where DISTINCTLY better than Hughes.

165, 65-88-153 +19 for EP
120, 20-35-55 -27 for JH

Those are worlds apart. EP isn't a legit comp AT ALL.

This feels similar to the Draisaitl contract. While it may not look great when it gets signed, it has the potential to be a huge steal in the near future. I do hope Hughes lives up to that potential, but if he doesn’t this could turn sour quickly. Looks like a good contract, but we’ll only know how good it actually is after a few seasons of development from Jack.

Draisaitl was coming off a 29-goal, 77-point season after which he went 6-10-16 +8 in 13 playoff games. Hughes is coming off an 11-goal, 31-point season and didn't play any playoff games.

This isn't comparable at all.

If Hughes continues on his current trajectory, this is a decent contract. Cant hate it for the Devils and the 8 years is fantastic.

Serious question: what is his current trajectory? He scored just 11 goals and 31 points last season and has only 3 GP so far this season, which isn't enough to draw any firm conclusions from.

Not yet. Give it time, he has shown that he has all of the tools to do so. Not everyone is a 1C straight off the hop

The problem here is that there are literally hundreds of players who appear to have "all the tools" at 20, very few of them pan out to elite 1C, which is what they're paying Hughes to be. It's a massive risk, and NJ took all of the risk. Ergo, it's a bad contract.

This is an interesting one.
I think people are getting hung up over the actual dollars, and I get it but we need to remember that ever since Chia blew up the RFA market its been Armageddon. Toronto was famously the first to deal with the fallout and now other teams are too. Any notions of contract value from before need to be discarded as they no longer apply.
People looking at Hughes raw numbers might see a guy with few counting stats, although a good deal of that is obscured by the covid shortening of last season. Here is what they may be missing. The underlying metrics suggest that Hughes is on the verge of a massive breakout and that it has already started. He has been quietly fantastic and the results are only beginning to show on the scoresheet. Getting this done now could save millions if the breakout is as large as we think it may be. Hell even a basic eye test will tell you that the raw skill to be something great is there. It is a gamble, but that is how the RFA market is working right now.

Let me be clear, this is a massive gamble. A very, very risky one. but I think it will work out and I would make it too. Besides I have been saying for years now, if you're going to overpay someone, overpay the young stars.

To be fair to Chiarelli (far be it from me to defend that clown!), he was signing the best player in the world and another who had already proved how dominant he could be in this league. This isn't a comparison at all as Hughes hasn't proved anything.

I dont think you know how this works

I think I know what you're talking about, but you are allowed to give players NTC & NMC in their UFA years

Until he actually becomes an Elite #1C and this contract becomes a steal. This is a high risk, high reward contract.

Suzuki when signed to his 8 year extension: 0.64 PPG, plays good two way hockey. THIS IS AWFUL FOR MONTREAL BAHAHAHAHA

Hugues when signed to his 8 year extension: 0.45 PPG, plays good two way hockey. GG LET'S GO, WE SO STACKED.

I think it has less to do with NJD and more to do with MTL haters. I don't think there's been a trade or higher salary signing on this site that Montreal has won

He has virtually no chance of becoming an "elite 1C" in the vein of McDavid, Draisaitl, Crosby, MacKinnon, Barkov, Aho, Malkin, Matthews etc.

I just don't see any scenario where this contract could be a "steal". If he hits his ceiling it would be considered fair pay. He's never going to be listed in the top 8 or so centers in the league.

His advanced stats last year were among the best in the league. This is the proof that he has the potential to be an Elite 1C. High risk high reward. In 5 years, 8M will be the pay for any 1st line player.

He'll have the 29th highest cap hit of a forward next year. With about 5 of 6 better players currently on an ELC, He'll need to be the 30th-35th best player in the league to live up to the contract.

Yes. Pettersson is nowhere near as good as Hughes. He's soft and he doesn't skate well at all. He has a great one-timer, though. I'll give him that much.

Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Dougie Hamilton, Luke Hughes, Ty Smith, MacKenzie Blackwood, Alexander Holtz, Dawson Mercer, Jesper Bratt, Pavel Zacha, Yegor Sharangovich, and the list goes on

ABSOLUTELY STACKED

And the vastly overpaid defense got dismantled by a supposed bottom five SJ Sharks. Good luck!

It was literally one game
Congrats on one win bud

Sharks fans shouldn't be talking about "overpaid defense"

I much rather have Hughes and Hamilton on long term contracts than MEV, Karlsson, Burns, etc
And Subban has one year left

I agree it's a gamble but where do you get 55 NHL games from? He has 119...

I meant "goals" not "games"... 55 career goals...

Im gonna blame my autocorrect on this one even if I might be the one who screwed up...
