Why I love Hughes on the Wing

Created by: NickC1988
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 30, 2021
Published: Nov. 30, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. The emergence of Dawson Mercer as a 2C. While still a small sample size, Mercer has been great contributing on all ends of the ice. With Johnsson and Bratt, he has experienced line mates to help him succeed in his own end as well.

2. Jack's offensive prowess is starting to show. Prior to injury, Hughes was looking like the offensive threat he was expected to be. Putting him on the wing allows him to be more aggressive offensively and take some defensive responsibilities off his plate. He has a very Patrick Kane-like mindset, making the wing a good spot for him.

I do think they extended him for too much too early, but we'll see if it pays off.

Absolutely, quality post here, with his extraordinary mobility as well it seems fitting definitely worth a try at very least also with him being bad at faceoffs

As long as he acts like Kane, he will be. By that, I mean staying healthy and not putting himself in vulnerable positions. I think he can get there, it's up to him to progress into a puck handling star. He needs to want the puck on his stick every shift.

I also like this idea but when they tried to play Hughes on the wing in his rookie year, he looked really bad. It looks like tonight Hughes will play wing next to Hischier and Zacha so Im excited to see what he can do

Didn't they try the Left wing last year? I think he does better on his off side similarly to Kane.

Not last year
Only in his rookie year
Last year he was only center with Nico out most of the year

Kid wants the puck on his stick, not every shift, but every second .... probably a bit too much stick handling at this level, but if anyone can pull it off, its him. Watching him skate with the puck is mesmerizing at times. As long as he can keep moving that giveaway number down, maybe it works.

He was a deer in headlights as a freshman. Different guy now, will be interesting to see.

I feel like having Hughes, Mercer, and Hischier as your center spine is way more valuble then having hughes on the wing. I understand Hughes may not be great at the faceoff circle but the kid is still very young and will only get better in that position. The reason I say this because the sabres took until Reinhart was 25 to finally realize that hes a pretty good centermen, and at that point it was to late.

I dunno, I feel like giving all three of those guys top 6 minutes is more important than putting them all at C. You're taking minutes away from one of them that doesn't deserve to lose minutes. Considering their winger depth isn't great, Hughes on the wing makes perfect sense. (These were the lines reported in AM skate, now he's with Hischier and Sharangovich)

nobody would be losing ice time depending on how they are deployed, for me I dont see Hischier as a number one center considering Jack Hughes has more potential as a center. Nico Hischier is gonna be just a 50 point guy in his career wheres Jack hughes has the potential to be the true number one guy at center.

He is still going to skate the puck up the middle of the ice. Doesn’t really matter if he starts at wing or center.

Nico is a 200 foot player, that's why he's the 1C and ultimately, the captain. On any team, players in the top 6 get more ice time than the bottom 6.
