Here are the factors I took into account:


1. Free draft pick for Ottawa.

2. Zaitsev's signing bonus money is buyout proof.

3. Byron's contract is 1 year shorter.

4. You can't trade Zaitsev to 10 different teams.

5. Byron is an Ottawa native who might sign with us at league minimum after his contract expires.

6. After retention, Montreal is left with the higher cap hit and takes on more salary.

7. Zaitsev should be our 8th/9th defenceman on our depth-chart next season.
