Im good with it. Devils have a ton of money to give to their young players to earn their contracts

i like the contract, but i feel like it’s important to note that the reason they’re not susceptible to a toronto situation because toronto’s players produced like crazy on their ELCs and hughes and hischier have not.

Definitely not a win by any stretch right now, we'll see if he can live up to it -- but I think they overpaid now and long-term. Should've signed something like $6m x 6 or $4.5m x 3 short term deal. And when those deals are up, is he an $8m guy then? If he is, would he really sign for much more than that at that point anyway? I don't see how he's earned more than Hischier at this point, let alone $8m.

My first (and only thought) ... I hope he proves durable...

That really has to be the primary concern now. He's going to continue to be a target & with that frame, you have to wonder how many 70 plus game seasons you get out of him.

fair, fair. they also waited until Marner was done with his ELC after a 94 point year. Hughes and Hischier (I believe) were extended a year before

yeah, but both matthews and marner scored 60 in their rookie years and matthews was a PPG player his second season and marner scored 69 points. they would have been big contracts regardless. i’m not even a toronto fan but i just feel like sometimes we’re a bit too hard on the contracts lol.

Love it. Absolutely love it.

NJD had already gone all in on Hughes and Hischier a while ago. Especially on Hughes. And almost instantly as well. In the year they selected Hughes, they drafted four childhood friends/teammates of Jack’s (Vukojevic, Moynihan, Clarke, McCarthy, etc). They invited others to camp. And most recently just drafted his little brother (a worthwhile pick in his own right). They have not been shy about this being Jack’s team.

Shero had been building a system around speed and puck possession for years and Hughes’ arrival cemented that strategy into place.

So if we paid him $6m or $8m, it doesn’t really matter as the whole thing is built around him anyway. If Jack thrives, the team will be successful. If he fails, the team will likely be unsuccessful.

So the question shouldn’t be whether or not we should have paid him $4m or $6m or $8m. The more fitting question is: Should NJD have hitched their boat to Jack’s? If yes, than of course, pay him $8m x 8.
