Trading Kane

Created by: OutCold13
Team: 2021-22 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 1, 2021
Published: Dec. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just putting this out there. I know no one wants a locker room cancers, but he is a great hockey player. Desperate GMs take desperate measures, they have nothing to lose.
Trades
SJS
  1. Lindblom, Oskar
  2. 2022 1st round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Lindblom for a cap dump but could be a simple late pick if Flyers don't need the cap space.
PHI
  1. Kane, Evander ($3,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Fletcher is probably getting a itchy trigger finger, being on the hot seat, so 1st round picks mean very little to him at the moment.
The 1st would however be sent to a team like Arizona to further retain salary. So ultimately Flyers get Kanes final 3 1/2 years at 2 million or less.
I believe A team like Arizona will be looking to retain at the deadline since they will be moving veterans at the deadline, but will still need to be above the cap floor.

Yep

Friedman thinks the only way to get a Kane trade done is via 3-way

SJ will be doing most of the adding with the third team getting Kane while also giving a low asset to the middle man.

In the end SJ will most likely either get a 7th or a cap dump player

San Jose isn’t in a place to add much to a trade for Kane other than the retention that they have already stated they are willing to take on. They can just buy him out in the offseason if worst comes to worst and keep their assets.

Lul with the pandemic and loss of revenue doubt SJ buys him out

They already got Jones to deal with and with their revenue losses and lower ticket sales they can't afford to be carrying another load of dead money

There gonna spend some assets to get rid of him if there is interest. Both Friedman and others have mentioned this as it's better than carrying dead money

A buy out is less than the retention, so I think they'll get something of value, but not that return.

His suspension for using a fake vaccination card is over, but his legal issues (domestic) and league investigation (betting) remain, so his value as a productive player is very much in doubt. Ultimately Kane even at 2mil is a risky proposition based on these off the ice issues.

Oskar is back and mostly healthy. He is doing all the right things: skating, fighting for pucks, board battles, sound defensively, but has just flashes of the offense that looked like a 15-20 goal guy.

I could see Lindblom for Kane and 3.5mil retained, but not with a 1st. I'm thinking Kane and 50% retention for Lindblom and a 3rd in 2023 or a high-ish midlevel prospect (something like a D Ron Attard or D Linus Hogberg or C Jay O'Brien).

But still not entirely sure PHI is that desperate to take a huge risk. (PHI's issue is injuries, but those players are starting to return)

What I am most concerned is who we will lose besides Kane as part of the trade. The Sharks need their draft picks and prospects especially since it’s a “win later” motive right now.

Also, obviously the cap hit if there is any retention. There has to be a point where a trade retention is worse than a buyout for Kane though. That may also be subjective.

I completely agree, there is a point where a buyout is less painful.

I get your thinking on that but the Sharks are in no position to dump prospects or picks. If they can't trade Kane without having to send a 1st then you just leave him rot in the AHL or you buy him out.
My point here is Fletcher is in a desperate situation so maybe he gambles.
