After This Season

Created by: MP55
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 1, 2021
Published: Dec. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
You’re not gonna be able to smell everyone off at once. There’s a lot of long term contracts on this team that are underperforming (Hoffman, Armia, Savard) that you won’t be able to move. Keep them around for another year to fill roster spots and hopefully rebuild their value a little bit so you can trade them in the future. I also don’t think many of the Habs prospects are ready for a roster spot yet (maybe ylonen as the season goes on) so it’s not like these guys are taking away roster spots from young guys. With all the long-term contracts on this team this redo (not gonna call it a rebuild because there are quite a few pieces here we can still build around, Suzuki, Caufield, Anderson, Romanov, Price, among others) Not trading Carey cause that will never happen in a million years.

Also, draft is in Montreal, Gorton is the luckiest GM on the planet, Montreal is a huge market that is underperforming.

=> Shane Wright?

Bettman also recommended Jeff Gorton to Montreal. Take from that what you will.

  1. Dvorak, Christian
Additional Details:
Bruins fill the void left by Krecji. Could see this to any team that needs an affordable second line center. Rangers also come to mind if they don’t bring back strome.

    1. Drouin, Jonathan ($2,250,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
Colorado will probably be losing Burakovsky and Kadri at the end of this year because they can’t really be throwing out long term extensions with the MacKinnon deal on the horizon. Drouin, who isn’t having a terrible season, at 50% retained for one year can slot into the middle six and provide skill player depth and contribute on the powerplay.

    MTL
    1. 2022 6th round pick (DET)

Perrault. Tampa gets cheap depth for the upcoming playoff run.

      EDM
Chiarot 50% retained. Edmonton gets a reliable left dman who can eat 20 minutes a night. Montreal gets what will most likely be a late first round pick. Habs can also take back a Kris Russel or Kyle Turris contract to help Edmonton with salary cap so Edmonton has a little more wiggle room for their pursuit of a goalie.

a 2nd for a retained drouin is fair value but it really depends on what else is out there.

calgary can probably dump lucic for less if they wait until after his signing bonus is paid. $1m salary with $6m cap hit is probably appealing to buffalo and arizona.

I agree with most of this, except for the Dvorak trade that I wouldn't do. He's a better player than he showed so far this season, and if we do draft a centerman (Savoie, Wright or Cooley) he could act as a great stopgap for a rookie, like Danault did with KK and Suzuki last year. His contract is also very manageable.

Yeah that’s fair. The only scenario where I’d think about trading him is if they land Wright, because then you’d have Suzuki, Wright, Poehling (if he continues to play the way he has since being recalled from Laval) and Evans, but I’d understand keeping Dvorak and shifting maybe Poehling to the wing.

He’s the “VP of Hockey Operations” but at the end of the day he’s gonna be making all of the moves and the GM is more so gonna be a yes-man who talks to the media.

That’s fair. This would only be a scenario where the flames desperately need the money to pay Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Kylington, etc.

He’s gone after next season. Might as well get something for him. No team is giving up anything more.

We can probably stop all the Canadiens-Rangers trade proposals, guys.
