Let’s not forget he looked right at home playing the wing, his offensive mindset really complimented Fiala IMO. That’s more an indictment on Evason’s usage of linemates than any player. As for Pitlick, the guy was ppg at the U and was trending that way in Milwaukee. And now he’s got .75 ppg in 12 games in the NHL. I’ll take that guy all day long, especially when you get him for free (might actually be the pickup of the year).

The linemate thing is literally because the Wild are built on defensive grinders that play a system. Ek or some other fan favorite isn’t what Fiala needs. Pitlick is.

Exactly

That's exactly what he is, and that's exactly why he's constantly being moved around the lineup after everyone else's place is set. He doesn't have a set spot in the lineup, he is the guy who gets placed where there's an opening. Just because the coaching staff trusts him to play with Kaprizov doesn't mean he's anything more than what I've said he is.

A slightly tangential question, should the Wild trade for a C if it means Fiala stays put?

What does this have to do with anything?

It’s a tangential question predicated on team composition. I want to know your answer to it.

As opposed to calling someone up from Iowa, and rewarding a kid that had been in the press box the last ten days? Sure whatever you say.

MN was already at the 23 man roster cap yesterday. I don't the the rules to non-roster a positive COVID test player. I also have no clue what time Freddy G's COVID test came back hot, so getting someone to MN from Iowa might have been too much of a time crunch? It was also a home game against a bottom feeder, so there might not have been any urgency?

This is team failure on the management side of things. Spurgeon should have been put on IR to open a roster spot. A FWD should have been called up when Zucc got hurt as an insurance policy. It's not like MN is cap tight at all.

It seems like every year there is at least one game a year where a d-man line up as a FWD: Addison, Hunt, even Prosser. Some of those years it was due to MN pushing the cap and having no room to play with.

Whether I think they should for a center or not is irrelevant, and it's an incredibly vague question. There are a multitude of factors that could influence the answer. So make your point first and then I'll see if it's worth answering.

Sounds like it was a failure by the coaching staff, who could have had a forward called up, but decided it would be better to play Addison there.

The idea behind getting a C and spending future capital is based on the idea that said player is *the* missing piece to a valid cup run. If you say we should get the C, that means the other pieces are there (which includes Pitlick since he plays one the wing).

Whether the Wild should acquire a center or not depends upon:

What we give up
Who the center is
How good he is
How expensive he is
Whether he has term or not
Whether he has team control in general
Whether extending him fits into the budget
How old he is
etc

But to make it really simple, no, this team is not one center away from winning a Cup

Same thing was said with Hunt last year. I think the real reason is they just wanted Addison for the PP (same as Hunt last year). Addison didn't get much 5v5 ToI until MN basically had the game locked up. If it would have been a close game he would have been riding the pine.

That last line is the most important, and I agree with it.

Well they didn't even use him properly on the PP, so that would have been a weird reason for them to put him in.

Remember, this coaching staff is lost on the PP. They haven't used players properly since the beginning of last season. They way they used Addison fits the design flaws that are already in place.

Not going to disagree with you about the flawed design at all, but they still could have used him as the QB over Brodin.

I agree. It's just one more player to add to the list of being in the wrong spot on the PP.

I'm going to be really curious to see how they use Boldy if he ever gets a shot. That's going to tell us a lot too.

With this staff. Call him up and then sit him in the pressbox while Addison plays FWD (only half joking).

My guess is he plays on either the Fiala or Sturm line. If he ever gets a callup that is.

I was thinking more where he'll play on the PP. I don't even wanna think about how they'll use him at even strength.

Left bench is my guess for the PP. Gotta keep Freddy G. on the PP after all. sarcasm

It really depends who's out.
