Wild Prospect Question

Created by: MNCountryClub
Team: 2021-22 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 29, 2021
Published: Dec. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Wild fans, I’m looking for some guidance from those of you who know our prospect pool well. Can you help me flush out approximate timelines on when we could expect NHL time? Maybe use current day Addison as the cutoff for what constitutes “nhl time”. Meaning, if they’re not even sniffing games or on the doorstep with the timeline below, I’m hoping to be corrected.

I realize it’s hard to say and some of the below guys may not ever make it. I’m just trying to project out the dead cap era a little better for my own understanding.

Let me know what looks off and if I’m omitting anyone key.

And feel free to let me know if you have any input on NHL likelihood too.

I would say

One year:
Boldy
Rossi
Addison
Dewar

Two years:
Beckman
Khusnutdinov
Lmabos

Three years:
O'Rourke
Hunt
McBain

Everyone else is either four years or more, or I don't really expect them to amount to much more than bottom six/bottom pair guys.

Some of the guys are definitely in between.

Beckman could be next year if everything goes right
Peart could be between three/four
McBain could see a fourth line role between two and three (if we sign him)
Johansson wasn't included but he could be between two and three in a bottom pair role (if we sign him)
Wallstedt could be between two and three for a backup role, but I'd imagine they'll take it slowly with him
Firstov could be between three and four as well

That's not out of line. I think it depends on whether they want to try to develop him into an all-situations top four D, or if they're fine with him ending up in the mold of someone like Carson Soucy, he's got the maturity and physicality to make it in two, but I think they'll want him helping to lead the charge in Iowa for an additional year, while they're breaking Lambos into the NHL.

That defense will be nasty is 2-3 years
Brodin- Spurgeon (vetrens)
Lambos- Dumba
Orourke- Addison
Wallstedt in net in 4 years
they might just have the best future in the league if they can get a true #1 center

The defense and goaltending are going to be good, but you can only prevent so many goals. They need to get much better on offense if they wanna be true contenders.

The current reserve list players depend on if/when they sign.

Now:
Addison
Boldy

Start of next year:
Dewar

Callups next year:
Rossi (probably makes the team out of camp, ready or not, because he was a high pick)
ROR
Beckman
McBain

2-3 seasons away:
Lambos
Marat K
Wallstedt
Hunt
FJ

Anyone more than 3 years away is too far to make a guess.

If Rossi develops as he was projected to, they could be an incredibly fun team to watch in 3 or 4 years.

Put me down for $1 on long odds.
McBain debut in the NHL next year.

(Boldy too. Those are the two I know, have seen the most).

That’s interesting because I have not watched McBain play, but I can see he’s a big boy and is having a great year.

I’ll have to make it a point to catch an Eagles game or 2 yet this year.

I think he makes his NHL debut this year. Incentive for signing with MN instead of pulling a Vesey and becoming a FA in the offseason.

How is his skating? I remember that being a criticism when he was drafted.

There is no chance in hell McBain makes his debut this year. Boldy didn't get his debut last year, and still hasn't. They didn't even give Rossi a chance at making the team in camp. If McBain even plays this year, he's going straight the to AHL, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Incentive or not, he's not playing in the NHL this season.

I don’t see him signing with the Wild given he can go UFA. He also doesn’t have the best progression for a prospect, but having played 4 years of NCAA I’d guess if he makes it it’ll be within the next year or two.

He's not going to beat you on transition.
But he will be good on the cycle down low for bottom-6er

Sign-ability thing. McBain can be NCAA free agent in August. If they offer a contract in April when his season is over, they can use a few games in NHL as a carrot. Happens all the time.

McBain is not good enough for that, and Guerin/Evason aren't going to play games with a roster that's going to be going for playoffs/home ice/division winner at the end of the season just to get a potential bottom six guy signed.

I’m interested to see what happens with Firstov and Nesterenko. If they want to sign Firstov, they do it this year and give Nesterenko one more year at BC because he’s such a late birthday.

I think Firstov mirrors a Beckman trajectory. You’ll know very quickly if he’s gonna be a factor once he gets to Iowa, he’s a scorer and you can always use that.

Can run an Iowa top nine next season of something like:

Beckman-Khusnutdinov-Rau
Firstov-Shaw-Novak
?-McBain-Pillar

Probably a guy like Cramarossa. Novak will be an interesting case as well. His skating was always the knock but he’s putting the puck in the net so I think they’ve gotta give it a chance.

Maybe not.
And maybe we have different views of role of GM vs coach.
I think not letting prospects walk is generally a good move by GM.
But that's just me.

If he's going to walk because he's not being promised NHL games, let him walk. We don't need fourth line divas coming into the locker room after one good year in the NCAA out of four. Guerin can't promise anyone play time. He's not the coach.
