IMO:
DeBrusk = 25-year-old potential 30-goal scoring top six LW, if playing with high-end C. High intensity and good offensive production in past playoffs. Currently an ineffective and very expensive bottom-six forward. These days, occasionally a healthy scratch. Quite weak if played at RW or C. May have defensive deficiencies in his game.
Kassian = 30-year-old power forward, capable of playing top or bottom six RW. Career high 15-goals, but more realistically 8-12 goal potential. Willing and capable of dropping the gloves with true heavy-weights. Seems to have learned more discipline and become a more effective agitator. Can sub in as net-front presence, and has been a sub in penalty killer as well. When he is at his best, he is an emotional leader who loves to throw his weight around and can play a strong support role for elite talents. Can be a game changer. Most nights he is not at his best. Perhaps a bit too much salary and term given his inconsistencies and recent injury history.
I would not do this trade if I was Ken Holland. The Oilers top six is already an offensive juggernaut, what Dave Tippett needs is a bottom six that can contribute more offensively and button up its defensive play. DeBrusk is not the solution for Edmonton. He has a boatload of talent, and should be playing top-six minutes somewhere, but not for the Oilers.
Thanks, I was not expecting such an in-depth response. And I agree that a DeBrusk acquisition doesn't make sense for Edmonton for the reasons you stated. Tippett himself has said several times recently that they need to work on getting the GA down, they clearly don't need a one-dimensional scorer.
The one quibble I have with your response is your assertion that DeBrusk's scoring potential is so much higher than Kassian's. I don't agree - the difference you're seeing in past results was due to PP deployment rather than ability. If you look strictly at 5v5 scoring rates over the past 3+ years, you'll see a different picture.
18-19
DeBrusk: 17 goals (
1.18 G/60)
Kassian: 12 goals (0.69 G/60)
19-20
D: 12 (0.86)
K: 15 (
1.03)
20-21
D: 3 (0.36)
K: 2 (
0.39)
21-22
D: 2 (0.54)
K: 3 (
0.84)
You have to go back 3 years to find a time when DeBrusk scored at a higher rate than Kassian. Even if you take the aggregate of those 3.25 seasons (heavily weighted to the 1st one for DeBrusk) they are in the same range: 0.84 for DeBrusk vs 0.79 for Kassian.
So even looking at DeBrusk's one good dimension there's no daylight between them. Edmonton declines.
