Carrier is a wild card. Currently one of the best kept secrets in the league. He easily can be the next Mackenzie Weegar.

The Preds love Carrier, and protected a whopping five defensemen in the expansion draft to make sure they didn't lose him. They're not going to give him up for a 3rd two years from now and Holl.

Nashville utilizes mainly puck moving dmen. Not sure how Holl would “fit their style” more. We’ve for years run our offense through our dmen. This would be a pass by Nashville

But didn’t they also do that to expose Duchene, and Johansen to left out of their contracts?

Nashville plays a defensive style that caters better to Holl’s play style. Holl is active on the point to create opportunities down low. Also Holl would be a better partner for Josi so it would allow Fabbro to floruish more being beside Ekholm. Holl is modern day defensive dman that unfortunately is losing his spot in Toronto with how Keefe prefers a more quick pass to forward to create offensive zone pressure rather than the dman skating it themelsves.

NSH didn't protect more defensemen to expose Johansen and Duchene. Being able to protect more total players by protecting fewer defensemen would mean the Preds wouldn't have had to risk losing guys like Jarnkrok, Ingram, Trenin, etc. If NSH wanted to dangle their high priced forwards like that for SEA, protecting extra defensemen doesn't make a difference.

Fabbro is playing with Josi mainly because he has lousy chemistry with Ekholm. Both Ekholm and Josi have publicly expressed how much they like partnering with Carrier. Holl trying to create offensive opportunities and wanting to skate with the puck himself actually makes him a bad partner for Josi. Those are the things Josi is elite at.

Then y’all can pair him with Ekholm. The whole off-season was mostly y’all tryna shed salary as y’all traded Ellis to do so when y’all could’ve protected him and got more than Phillips Myers and Cody Glass. I’m more than certain that’s why y’all did 5 defenceman.

Seattle knew who they wanted on defence and offence from every team. Seattle was extremely high on Jankrok. I doubt they would’ve taken Carrier especially since he didn’t really break out till this year

NSH's off-season moves were more about the Preds wanting to get younger. While every team tries to be mindful of the cap obviously, that wasn't as big of a concern. NSH would still be comfortably under, even if they still had Ellis and Arvidsson. The Preds protected five defensemen because they felt losing any of those five would hurt more than losing any of the forwards they left exposed.

Regardless of if NSH wants to get younger, shed salary or both, this trade does neither. Holl is older and more expensive than Carrier. If NSH wanted to add someone like Holl, they could just give TOR a 3rd or whatever for him. They have no need to give up Carrier, and if TOR insisted, NSH would hang up and acquire some other vet defenseman instead.

I have no insight into what SEA thought of NSH's players leading up to the draft. Carrier's breakout happened last season, so he could have been on their radar. Poile obviously felt that the chance of SEA selecting him was high enough that he protected the player, to ensure it couldn't happen.

Not sure how much Seattle knew who they wanted. There’s a reason we traded Arvidsson (would’ve probably been picked) and protected Jeannot (might’ve been picked). Seattle was purposely avoiding most big contracts which gave Poile free reign to leave Joey and Duchene exposed. We purposely protected 5 dmen and left Jarnkrok out there. If he is who they really wanted then we could’ve easily left someone else unprotected to cover him.

Regardless, getting older on defense isn’t in line with the current trend in Nashville. Our best two dmen are 30 (or close to). The next wave of Nashville dmen are mid 20s (Fabbro, carrier, Myers). This isn’t a team in contend now mode. Heck right now we are bubble at best. Expending young resources to get older and no closer to the cup makes 0 sense for Nashville.
