this team sucks lets make it better

Created by: bagelbob
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 4, 2021
Published: Dec. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
with this team we have tons of cap room and can add pieces or even take on cap from others in exchange for assets. our drafted prospect in all likelihood won't end up being shane wright because things tend not to work out, but i'd be surprised if we didn't have at least a top 10 pick at this point if not a top 5 pick so whoever we get is hopefully not going to be the michael dal colle of the draft and will actually be good. even though i know in my heart if we get past 1 or 2 we're going to end up with brad lambert who i'm sus of. but anyway you can substitute shane in for savoie or cooley or kemell or whoever or maybe they draft nemec or someone instead, idk. but those are the vibes.

Getting a high draft pick is a blessing in disguise and they have enough cap room to re-tool and be a contender next season. I have a feeling they’ll draft Kemell , makes no sense to take a RHD like Nemec.

both of these guys are probably mid round pick-ish value rn, varly could probably get a second or maybe even a first depending on if they can catch anyone looking for a goalie with no options like the yotes did with sakic this year. i didn’t want to get bogged down with comments being like “we’d never do that” when no one (including me) knows what the circumstances will be next year. i was mostly looking to get like the three other islander fans on this site to reply to me to start a discussion lol

i could see that for sure. i was thinking a puck-moving RD type might be somewhat useful if they let mayfield leave/trade him, and if he’s BPA i’d 100% be interested in him but i agree a forward makes the most sense. feels like they’ll take lambert with lane being his uncle but idk i just don’t like him as much as some of the other prospects

Have you seen the Coyotes, complete dumpster fire.
Then may i direct your eyes to the Habs, not pretty.
Next up the Senators are not progressing.
You can continue to keep pace with the Sabres, but ultimately Islanders are better. I'm just saying i wouldn't bet on Shane Wright being a Islander, but maybe Gary Bettman smiles down upon Lou.

Idk who needs a goalie, everyone will say Edmonton but how do they fit Varlamov.

idk who it is rn either, but if we have a ton of cap, we can retain half and i’d think a team would be interested in varly at 2.5mil next year, especially if you can catch them off guard. maybe colorado depending on what happens with kuemper or maybe chicago if fleury’s gone next year. other teams’ fans probably know their goaltending situation better than me but those and edmonton are the three that came to mind immediately

i wouldn’t bet on it either but one has to be optimistic. that said, i am very confident in their chances of landing a top 10 pick. this team is god awful. they can’t score. their goaltending has been solid but only sorokin has been great. their defense includes zdeno chara getting regular minutes and ryan pulock out for weeks. it’s bleak.

I’m all for BPA, but I think there are 5-7 forwards I would take over Nemec. With Pulock and Dobson on the right side, RD shouldn’t be a priority. Dobson has been incredible with an increased role btw.

I doubt they pick Lambert, but he wouldn’t be a bad pick. We could use a dynamic winger with elite puck skills + skating ability

Hey you forgot to trade Bailey. BTW if we draft Wright then Nelson has to be moved to wing.

It's the same problem every season, there's no scoring, you can only have so many defensive minded forwards in the lineup and win in the regular season for so long. Barzal is such wasted talent, the team has no finisher. Lee isn't what he was, Palmieri sucks. Spending $9M on goaltending when you can't score is just stupid. Pageau isn't worth his contract (never understood why they traded for him).

Boy, they could really use a semi-decent puck moving defenseman (cough, Devon Toews, cough). Dobson is probably going to cost more than that, he's been their only bright spot this season.

They have trouble scoring because they broke up the backbone of their team (pelech-Pulock) which is the #1 reason the isles went to the ECF two years in a row. That’s on Trotz. It’s tough to score goals if you’re spending a majority of time scrambling in the Dzone because Trotz needs to have Greene and chara in the lineup at the same time.

Wahlstrom is a great finisher and by far the isles best winger this season. He’s the perfect winger for Barzal but the coach hates young players so he refuses to move him to the 1st line. Barzal was one of the best 5v5 producers in the league last season with Lee and Eberle - wasted talent 🤔

Trading Devon Toews was incredibly stupid, but the isles problems on D would have been solved by scratching Chara earlier in the season and replacing him with an average two way defenseman to play with Dobson. Pulock is an elite puck mover and Dobson is great as well. The isles D is being dragged down by two washed up pylons.

Raty is at least 1 more year out. He’s gotta play a full year in the A. Pageau is a true C, so Shane Wright would end up going on the wing. I also have a hard time thinking that they would get the 1st pick without some lottery luck. I think Dobson gets a little bit more than that as well. I’d also think Clutterbuck, they didn’t protect him from Seattle and sign Cizikas for nothing. Overall, really like this lineup, especially the Holtby signing. Gives them some cap space if they do decide to go after a FA, 1 year trade, or could just save it for Barry and Wahlly.

I'd happily argue that Barzal would be a consistent 90 point player if he had talent around him. Lee and Eberle aren't prototypical 1st line forwards. MacKinnon has Rantanen, Matthews has Marner, Bergeron has Pasta and Marchand. Barzal has Lee. See the difference there? Look at Marchand, Pastrnak, Marner, and Rantanen; then take a look at Lee. It's not even close to say Lee can keep up with any of those players, they're in a different echelon.

Barzal was top 15 among forwards in 5v5 scoring last season. The issue is Trotz likes to roll 4 lines so Barzal rarely gets 20+ min of ice time. Top 15 considering the limited ice time is elite production. Lee was on a 36 goal pace last season before his injury. He has provided 1st line value the last 3 seasons and so did Eberle. They were one of the best lines in the league. The main reason Barzal isn’t putting up 90 points is lack of powerplay production which is due to not having a a one time option. Trotz finally put Wahlstrom and Barzal on the same PP unit and Barzal has 3 pts on the PP in the last 2 games.

Like I said before Wahlstrom is the perfect winger for Barzal and sooner than later that needs to happen. Wahlstrom can easily score 35-40 goals with an increased role with Barzal. It doesn’t make sense why they are not on the same line.

this is why they need to tank this season imo and get someone who projects as a first line talent to play with barzal. wright's a center obviously but they could get one of savoie, kemell or slafkovsky and that'd be sick. i think wahlstrom's a solid player and will be very useful and is a good wing option for barzal in the short term but they need to take advantage of this opportunity they have being bad and pick up the type of player they really need.

I'm not against it, the other issue is they really don't have much assets to sell. They better hope their 1st rounder is top 10, but with Trotz at the helm, it's not as easy as just tanking. He'll want more wins out of them.

Trotz still thinks Chara is a #1 defenseman, the isles won’t have any problems tanking

I'm not against it, the other issue is they really don't have much assets to sell. They better hope their 1st rounder is top 10, but with Trotz at the helm, it's not as easy as just tanking. He'll want more wins out of them.

tbh with the lineup he’s putting out there, the tank doesn’t have to be on purpose, they just don’t have it

Not going to argue that one, they just can't score and it's obvious.
