San Jose is not adding their 1st to move Kane at ~40%...

Kane is still a very effective top 6 hockey player

Sharks aren’t trading their first, retaining $3 mil and taking on over $5 mil when they can buy him out

anything over kane 40% reserve is foolish and not cost effective. Kane 30-45% retained for a mid level prospect is fair otherwise we bury him for the year and buy him out in the offseason

Canes very likely view Niederreiter as an “own-rental” this year. I don’t think they’d consider this, even with the pick upgrade. Niederreiter’s $5.25M falls off the cap next season, Kane’s $3.5M (or whatever his end cap hit would be with retention) comes with 3 more years of commitment.

The Canes will need every bit of cap space they can muster to re-sign RFAs - Necas, Bear and Kotkaniemi. DeAngelo is also an RFA who I think they’ll try to retain as well. They may also want to see about keeping Trocheck. With Kane’s cap hit on the books for next season, there’s no way they keep everyone.

They can't buy him out before the 5 mil of Nino (Who's a VERY GOOD player and well worth his deal) expires.

They're retaining, that's public, and it might genuinely need to be this kind of deal to get him out of there.

This is WAY too much of a risk for Carolina. He's explosive in a bad way, and you want to remove a top 6 forward for him? It's a bad idea

KK's cap hit will come down. The rest is all valid.

My comment is more saying they don’t want to take on all that cap in retention, take on a contract (not that Nino is bad) and give up a first. They just don’t have the depth in the organization to move 1st round picks.

They'll have to take on a contract, and Kane's upside isn't far from Nino at all... they get rid of a cancer. This isn't the best trade, and if Nino was under contract it would make more sense. But they get an NHL player in exchange for this. They're not losing that 1st for anything insignificant.

They would take Nino but not giving up the first too, there’s just no way around that. That 1st is more valuable to them than the extra $3.5 mil for a few years or whatever the buy out cost is.

And as players, bs aside, Kane is on higher level than Nino. Kane has scored more than 25 goals 4 times in his career, Nino has scored 25 once six seasons ago. Kane has put up 8 seasons of 40 or more points, including the last 3 seasons, and Nino has done that twice with the last time being six seasons ago. It’s really not close on a player comparison.

Kane also is on the wrong side of 30, is a renowned locker room issue, and is disliked by his teammates. That is BEFORE you open up the can of worms that is EVERYTHING else. Nino is better defensively, has better underlyings, and is a fair bit younger.

They are literally a year apart. I fully believe Kane is better defensively as well. He was the best forward on the sharks last year in both ends

Nino's underlyings have him as a top 15 forward in the NHL defensively at even strength. Kane was below replacement level.

Okay, fair enough. Kane still is the much better player. He’s an easy 25 goal scorer to whichever team he’s added to.

He's also a cancer for whatever team picks him up. Nino is someone who is known to be loved wherever he goes
