Since The NHL Makes Players Police Themselves

Created by: Agent_Of_R9

Description
I am among the vocal majority that believe teams like Toronto and Pittsburgh are not physically abrasive enough to overcome the heavy forechecking and disciplined defensive teams that excel during the playoffs. While I still maintain that belief, I don't blame the players for what happened against the Jets on Sunday. As much as I support the notion of engaging in physicality as a way of intimidating star players, I don't agree if the opposition is directly infringing the rules of the game.

When Dubois grabbed Matthews, he should've been called for interference since he was nowhere near the puck when that happened. Pionk's trip on Sandin was a blatant slew foot (not the first time he's done something like this), so it was inevitable that Spezza and Simmonds would retaliate since the officials didn't do anything.

Honestly, this is not the first time something like this has happened. For example, last season, Artemi Panarin had to fight Tom Wilson because the Caps player was cross-checked Buchnevich on the head before punching the neck area multiple times. During the playoffs, the Penguins' entire 1st forward line and defense pairing got misconducts because Scott Mayfield cross-checked Crosby in the head when the Penguins player was protecting his goalie from giving up a rebound.

It seems like a common theme now that weaker teams try to intimidate or injure the opposing team's top players by playing extremely physical. I don't mind this type of strategy, but it has to be in accordance to the written rules of the game. Cross checking someone after the whistle or away from the puck, intentionally jumping at opposing players with elbows and slew footing are not examples of this.

At this point it really feels like the NHL is trying to encourage teams to play against the rules. The amount of missed calls that happen every season is shocking. I think the fact that McDavid hasn't drawn any penalties in the last 2 playoffs is all we need to know, Crosby has faced a similar issue throughout his career. The NHL puts the onus on the players to protect themselves and that is ultimately going to be the downfall of their health.

What is your opinion on my rant regarding the NHL's regulation of rules? Do you agree or disagree?

I think you are probably too young to know how the game used to be played in the 80s/90s. This is all pretty tame in comparison.

Yeah, it sucks being a fan of a skilled team when the rule book gets thrown out the window once the playoffs arrive, but just have hope the big 4 can battle through it.

Didn't bother looking at the trades, as I'm sure I've seen and commented on them all before.

I wasn’t born during the Gretzky and Lemieux era but I still don’t think it’s right to call games like this. It’s hard to play your game when the opposition deliberately breaks the rules as their strategy to contain you.

For sure it’s been bad. But I also wonder if the administration has ordered referees to let players get away with infractions against the rule book. It seems like they specifically encourage abuse against skilled players and punish them if they fight back.

Which players that I acquired are slow? Lafreniere, Crouse & Reilly are great skaters. Much better than Ritchie & Holl.

1. Reilly isn’t really a top four D (kind of a fringe 4/5)
2. Reilly isn’t a RD.

Doesn’t really match either of your qualifying statements.

3. Would you stop with the lafreniere trades? At this point i can’t tell if you’re trolling. 0.0% chance they’re even taking calls on him. Him being traded is one of the most foolish and unrealistic concepts you could ever come up with, and you’ve done about 100 of them.

Not big enough. Got to trade out Kerfoot for a retained Kane too on the 1st line, bump Bunting down to the 2nd.

i dont see why admin would say to not call anything on their skill players. The best players in the game are the skill players so letting plugs get away with stuff against them is bad business for marketing and growing the game. I just think the refs are bad, and trying too hard to manage the game.

Yeah, well until the old school types are gone from hockey ops, I don't see things changing much.

Once viewers and attendance continues to slip, maybe in 5-10 years time they'll figure out things have to change.

Lemieux used to have to play with two guys draped on his back for pretty well entire games.

Thanks for the feedback. Reilly played top 4 during his days in OTT & MTL while achieving solid results so i feel he can be that for us. I think Lafreniere would be a great pickup for TOR because of his physicality & forecheck. We badly need that rn.

Fair enough. But honestly I think the top 6 is fine, they just need some guys at the bottom who can do some physical puck retrieving for them.

Yeah I definitely think there’s too much game management. But maybe Bettman & Parros prefer goon style hockey, so unfortunately the star players are at a disadvantage.
