O@Rourke is a great piece and the 1st is a 1st, but Gautheir has little value and a 4th doesn;t move the bar that much.
Its probably O'Rourke, MIN 1st and MIN 2nd at the least, even for a rental.
And maybe PHI takes UFA Rask at 4mil to make it work, but I think they'd want the additional pick or a prospect whos in the 3-6 range of the organization
Detroit only have two retention slots free and need them for their own players. Detroit have five players on expiring contracts that may need retention to get a good return at the deadline.
If you want Detroit to forego a decent return on players like Fabbri, Greiss, Leddy, Stecher, Namestnikov then you'll have to stump up a lot more than a 5th round pick as compensation.
It's not about the cap or the money, it's the three slot limit for retentions.

If trading Giroux means rebuild that means you need assets and can’t pull a Ron Francis and set a price that is so high nobody will pay. I understand Giroux is a key piece of the org but you have to have a plan. A 1st and a prospect is a huge price for 20 games.

I understand what you're saying here and Gautheir was primarily for cap purposes. Rask is heating up and on an expiring deal, which is why I opted to go with Gautheir.
Giroux is a stud make no mistake about it. No team is willing to pay the price you've outlined here for someone who won't consider an extension with the trading team, nor would most deadline trading teams have the ability to do so (MIN especially). He's going to walk right back to Philly at the conclusion of this season and retire a Flyer. That said, I think a fair asking price from the Flyers is what I've proposed in this scenario. Fits a need for MIN while obtaining valuable assets for Philly moving forward. If I'm Philly there's no question I take an offer such as this and happily treat Giroux to an extension after his playoff run.
The whole rental market in the NHL is moronic! One team wins the Cup, all other playoff teams will have buyers remorse the rest of the summer! I truly believe it has more to do with winning a pissing contest with other GMs than it does actually trying to improve your team…
Hence, this is, IMO, a monster overpayment for Girioux…and I’m a fan!

It is a large payment which many GM's would turn away from. From a MIN perspective I think you've got to go for it this year assuming they stay towards the top of the standings. That doesn't mean you have to go out and get a star like Giroux. Perhaps there's other cheaper alternatives to fit the needs MIN has that won't cost them nearly as much. With their cap constraint issues beginning next year I'm not sure if they have as realistic of a chance after this season. I threw this scenario out because I think Girioux makes this team a force to be reckoned with come playoff time, and in the grand scheme of things, is this really that much of an overpayment?
I love giroux but for a player like him for 20 games I’d give so much less. I’d look at like a Gaudreau* and a 2nd. Which seems insane, but it speaks more to the overpayment every team does for rentals. after Martin hanzal I can’t picture Minnesota trading away 1sts for rentals almost ever.

Yeah, very much so for a rental! Minnesota doesn't have cap issues this year , so they don't need any team to retain
I like Giroux but this is too much for a rental IMO. I could see him getting something like this, but it shouldn't be us who pays the price
Especially since he has said he would like to finish his career in Ottawa where he lives in the offseason and played Junior hockey for the Gatineau Olympiques.

With smart moves, the Wild can comfortably navigate their cap restraints and stay competitive…they absolutely do not need to mortgage the future for this season!
