Defense is definitely better but I'd say you've overpaid for what Manson should cost on the open market.

Up against the cap relying on both Smith and Keith to LTIR retire although should get an extra mil to work with next year, not enough though if either of them don't retire.

Biggest issue I see is the bottom 6 is getting absolutely destroyed this year and it's the same group.

Like I stated in the title this is my vision of the "best offseason possible" so it won't happen but would be amazing.

Keith and smith both have good odds of retiring though so that helps.

The bottom 6 is steal weak b u t if mcleod, benson or foegle at least 2 of them take that next step it will be marginally better .

In free agency overpaying usually happens and I don't think manson is the worst option to overpay on. He isn't super injury prone and his play style isn't reliant on age making him a solid choice.

With these moves though our d-core goes from bottom 5 to top 5 in one offeason

Well that’s a massive package for chychrun I get he’s worth more than Barrie but no way would I throw that much in the deal. I think most on here severely undervalue Barrie and pretend he’s a cap dump or an asset with little to no value which is absurd.

Also Chychrun only had 1 fantastic year where he was sporting an unsustainable shooting percentage. I get that he's also got a great contract, but people here treat him as if he's a top-10 defenseman but he's not. He's a 2nd pairing guy on most teams.

in my opinion not really he is terrible defensively and for a d-man that isnt very good
his 4.5 cap hit sucks too

W e l l I should have stated this but it would involve mcleod, benson and foegle developing into middle 6 guys

Of he was good defensively he'd be making $9M per season instead of $4.5M. He doesn't have a bad contract AT ALL. You're getting a top-10 offensive defenseman in the league for just $4.5M due to being average defensively - that's a good deal.

Ryan Shore and Kassian could all be worse next year though? I'm not seeing any improvements even if the other 3 take a step forward... and Foegele is 26, not sure why you'd expect any improvement from him.

He is a second pairing guy in this example, Bouchard can provide what Barrie does but better and cheaper.

OP forgot to adjust cap to 86,200,000 if Keith Retires. Meaning we can certainly address Bottom 6 with FA

He's paying for him in trade value like he's a top-10 guy though. I really don't see the point with 3 decent LHD prospects who are (or will be by next fall) NHL ready.

McLeod and Foegele have a good probability of rounding into good 3rd liners, I'm pessimistic on Benson though. I think if the forward group is healthy and Holloway is back, he ends up on waivers. Sceviour and Shore can PK. Benson doesn't really fit in the bottom 6 and hasn't shown anything that makes you give him a look at the top 6.

You pay for the contract essentially and hasn't he finished top 10 in Norris the last couple of years? I agree its a big package but he does give this D core more experienced depth that isnt on IR due to being an old man.
