Anyone that says the goalie should stay in the net is an absolute buffoon. The impact a goaltender can make playing the puck is immense especially with a goaltender that excels at it (Ben Bishop, Martin Brodeur). This will also out weigh the one or two dang its throughout the year.

You hit on the root of the problem though. Every goalie of this generation grew up watching Brodeur, and thinks they can handle the puck like him. They can’t. This is literally like saying everybody should try to 1v4 opposing teams because Connor McDavid can. Just because the greatest skater in the history of the NHL can do something doesn’t mean you should try it, and just because the greatest puck-handling goalie in the history of the NHL can do something doesn’t mean every goalie should try it. If it’s safe to come out of your net to play the puck, by all means (e.g. icings on PKs), and if there’s no pressure (e.g. line change) or it’s a clean dump straight to the corner, by all means get the puck. But a goalie should never be making a hail mary pass when there’s pressure/traffic, never try to dangle opposing players, never pass the puck up the middle, and honestly don’t even bother going for rimmed shots unless they drop below the stanchions, because it happens too often. Like, what’s more dangerous, an opposing player grabbing the puck behind the net and going for a wrap-around or an “unlucky” bounce to a wide open opponent in the middle of the ice who you just gifted an open net to shoot at. It’s one of those things that everyone just does and nobody questions, but deserves to be questioned because it literally only leads to bad goals (and I mean bad as in you let in a goal and that’s bad for your team, not bad because you get clowned on the highlight reel). Rule of thumb for goalies should be to only play safe pucks (when there’s no forecheck), and make the simple pass to your defenseman rather than trying to headman the puck yourself (99/100 times this is the best play, drives me nuts when an open D is 15 feet away and the goalie goes for the 120ft pass that gets intercepted). Everything else makes little to no positive difference and leads to goals against regularly, there’s a reason we generally see multiple of these every week. Cut the foolish stuff out of the game and save your team a few goals against per year, sounds worth it to me.

Also, on a somewhat related note, concerning things we take for granted in hockey that should change, why do penalty killers with possession, but not an odd-man rush, always try to enter the offensive zone? Like, you’re not going to get a good scoring opportunity and you’re not going to retain possession in the offensive zone for any serious length of time. Literally just pass it back to your defenseman and circle back into your own zone, retain possession, and kill the clock. It’s stupid to try and go in and take a weak shot off the rush from the outside that the goalie can see all the way when you can maybe kill off another 10 or 20 seconds and be in a much better position to meet the counter rush when you inevitably lose possession. I’ve been banging this drum for years, and there’s literally precedent for this, teams skate around with the puck and loop back to their own end all the time in OT and that’s at even strength, why hasn’t anybody made the connection to do this when they’re shorthanded and killing time is actually beneficial? Also, it works, check out this video. They literally killed off over a minute (only counting beginning when Hoffman curled back) before deliberately giving the puck away (because it was a delayed penalty, in a normal situation you would hypothetically just ice it, change, and be back at even strength, or better yet retain possession at even strength). For the record I’ve been saying to do this long before that shift, but it’s like everybody in the hockey world saw that, acknowledged it worked really well, and decided to never try to replicate a simple, successful strategy, which is mind-boggling.

Bobcat’s Post Game Notes, Game 26

Jackets win 5-4 in overtime over the Seattle Kraken.

-A win? On the road? Am I dreaming?

-Nothing to complain about in terms of lines that I haven’t already complained about enough.

-The game started out kinda slow, but we heated up through the game. That 2nd period in particular was pretty good: Max Domi scored 2 goals and we were up 4-1 by the end (uh oh). Luckily we held on.

-We ALMOST choked it but we put together a great effort to win in overtime. Voracek to Bean (Jake²?) to put the game away in overtime.

-Jakub Voracek has now racked up 21 assists. The current team record is 36 assists. He’s on pace to SHATTER this record (69 assists. Nice.)

Wait, the CBJ team record for assists is only 36? Didn’t Panarin get assist totals in the 50s when he was there?

Wait, I just saw “assists records” and didn’t notice the “rookie” part of the website i was looking at. Zach Werenski put together 36 assists as a rookie, Artemi Panarin got 59 assists in a season (any experience). Either way, Jake is still on pace to set a new record.

I swear to god the Stars are probably one of the most streaky teams ever.

Win 7 in a row just to lose 3 in a row after that, where’s the consistency? And it’s been like that all year.

Quite lucky for me it's been the games against pacific teams. They start 5.30 AM here so those are ones I'm going to skip.

Another shootout win yesterday. We got to see tj Sochi score a shootout goal five hole. We are very depleted right now so maybe we try to go out and get someone. Also can a nhl team loan a player to another team. For example, the caps want Clayton Keller who we don’t need this is just an example, and Arizona loans him to us to win games and for Arizona to help the tank. Then before the deadline we trade him back with a pick for the price of the loan. It’s just trading for someone for free then sending them back to the original team with a pick for the price of it.

GMs would have to have a lot of trust in each other to give away a player for free and hope their trade partner just gives them back, but it’s an interesting idea.

Thanks. I thought of this because of the injuries we have and the Hershey capitals and ovi and company can’t carry us for much longer. And this would be until everyone is healthy

I didn't know shootout goals count as game deciders when they don't count toward regular goal totals.

Well, it actually makes sense, that way there's the same number of game-deciding goals as there was games in the year but not more goals scored throughout the year than the final score would suggest

Optimus Reim 🥵🥵💪 THRIVES in Teal. Hope he keeps it up, not for the team, but for himself. Who doesn’t love some James Reimer success.

After his win last night his numbers improve to:

1.88GAA
.937 SV%
15-6-1 (W-L-OTL) in 23 games
(9-4-1 this season, .937SV%, 1.98GAA, 1 shutout)

At least Laurent Dauphin doesn't have the 4th highest time on ice of your current 12 forwards over guys like Poehling, Ylonen, Caufield, Lehkonen, Armia, etc
