I’d probably do this if I’m Mtl. Monahan is a year and a half older than Dvo, but has more raw talent. I don’t know if I’d rather have Valimaki or a 2nd round pick though.

Honestly, I think I'd rather have Valimaki than the 2nd. He's got some pretty good talent, and the Habs can afford to give him the playing time he needs to develop in the NHL.
As for Monohan, has Dvorak played that bad this year? He's playing tough minutes from what I've seen, and the whole team has struggled, so his numbers allign. Monohan has played sheltered minutes, under 15 on average. Even with all of Calgary's success this year, he hasn't really lived up to expectations.

If Habs fans would be happy with this though, (esp shedding cap), I'd say go for it.

Yeah Dvo definitely plays tough minutes. I really can’t explain why Monahan is in Sutter’s dog house though. He’s always been a top of the league in takeaways and has put up great numbers in his career. If it’s a defensive positioning thing then why not just play him in a offensive role? I don’t get it, but he definitely has more talent than Dvo does. Maybe he just doesn’t fit Sutters system and a change of scenery is needed.

Personally, I don't think he should be one of the guys that MTL looks to move. My fear with Monahan is the hip surgery. That's one of the worst injuries for a hockey player, cause so much of what they do comes from that part of the body. I'm not sure he's ever going to get back up to his potential.

At least Mono is only under contract for one more season after this year

Agreed, but he doesn't help the rebuild IMO. Dvorak could

In that case based on age and current play by both players, I'd look to one of the other long term guys

Well in that case I’d probably keep Dvo. And yeah I don’t believe we’re necessarily going to do a full rebuild. I expect Gorton to do something similar to what he did with the Rangers. He didn’t sell every piece off. He kept Kreider at 27, and signed Panarin, obviously kept Zabanejad who was probably around 26, as well as other players in a similar age group. Everyone 25/26 and under is likely staying and that includes Dvo. I think Petry will stick around unless he starts playing better because he’s untradeable right now, he’ll stay for the last 3 years as a vet to lead the kids. Savard probably sticks around unless a team like Vancouver makes a move for him but I doubt it. We’ll try to move Chiarot, Paquette, Perrault and Wideman at the deadline. Toffoli, Edmundson, Hoffman, Gally, Armia and maybe Drouin will all be on the trade market. Like I’ve said in the past I would try to move Hoffman with a mill retained to a team for a bad contract who is a healthy scratch not contributing to their team and a pick. I personally would keep Anderson. We already have a very deep prospect pool with Gorton now in charge to make sure a few develop into nhlers, we are going to have a couple very high picks next couple drafts as well as many more picks. I expect this to be around a 3 year turn around similar to the Rangers as long as it’s done right.

On the Savard note, I don't know that Rutherford calls Gorton about him given the way he's been playing this season. It doesn't look like it's a case of poor fit for Savard in Montreal, it seems like his game his simply fallen off as inevitably expected

Idk man he’s looked better in the last 10 games or so including last game where he looked really good. I think it is at least partly the fit. He seems to be trying to do to much offensively, probably because he looks around and thinks that’s a void needing to be filled considering we don’t have any offensive Dmen, and that’s not his game. He’s a stay at home guy who’s had great defensive metrics his whole career. I like to assess the situation he’s in before simply saying a guy has fallen off. He’s playing on a horribly built team, half the roster injured, started the first 15 games with another defensive D in Chiarot and has looked better since being moved away from him. I’m not saying he will be moved, I lean at the side that nobody will trade for him, but GM’s who are trying to build their team to be more suitable for the playoffs will sometimes make a move for a player like him. There are a lot of dinosaur GM’s still in the league. If we can’t move him in fine with it though. We’ll be rebuilding anyway.

For sure, I don't view Savard as a negative asset, but he probably needs to continue to get his game trending in the right direction as he seems to be doing like you pointed out if he wants to recoup his trade value. Don't know if he fits in Habs long-term plans, so wouldn't rule him out as an untouchable
