A lot of East Germany was west of Berlin. Also, both German sides had their own teams.

Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, etc all part of USSR. Eastern Bloc countries had their own teams….but maybe only adding Sharangovich, Blueger, maybe one or two others to mix to what is the Russian team today.

I was talking about the Berlin Wall, the literal border between the EU and the USSR

The EU and the USSR never existed at same time. EU began about a decade after USSR fell. And Berlin was well Into Eastern bloc.

The wall surrounded the Western- administrated zones of Berlin (just like the nation was split into 4 parts, so was the capital city). Since it was in the middle of the East Germany, they walled off the western parts of the city. But it was not the line for which East/West lines were drawn.

Not only are plenty of these players not from former Soviet Socialist Republics, but plenty of these players weren't even born when the Soviet Union collapsed! What were you trying to do here?
