Different Moves

Description
I'm unsure what a fair price for Kubalik would be. Being in the same division, it would probably be a bit more than some other teams -- just not sure what the baseline is really. Maybe just a 1st and CHI gets back in the first round. Though I'm not sure NSH would want to give up their 1st this year. Maybe a prospect like Prokop would interest them? Let me know what you think!

middle 6 alternative:
Kubalik - Johansen - Tolvanen
Kunin - Brassard - Tomasino

I saw someone else move Kubalik for a first so I think you'd only need a 5th or 6th for inner-division.

Would Myers be available if he's scratched?

I've seen all sorts of deals out there - 1sts, a couple of picks, a 2nd + prospect -- I feel like his value is just generally hard to gauge. I'd want to avoid dealing the 1st, so I wonder if something around Prokop (or another prospect - though I don't see many as expendable right now for NSH) + picks would interest them.

Doubtful. I think preds won't resign benning and boro so Myers will prob have a bottom pair spot (at first).

Kinda reminds me of the Viktor Arvidsson trade, but that was outside of the division.

Coincidentally, why the heck didn't you just keep Arvidsson!

I don't want him to be scratched, but Hynes is playing him rather sparingly right now. He looked only OK in his first few games, but since seeing more time in the press box, I think he's looked good when used -- at least enough to warrant more playing time. We'll see what Hynes does.

Having said that, I don't see them trading him right now unless it's a very good offer. Hynes did a similar thing to Fabbro last season, and now Fabbro looks great. So maybe that's his goal? Either way, it's frustrating as a fan.

I thought he looked better than Benning.
But I like his game, so i'm kinda biased.

Don’t see the Hawks being willing to move on from Kubalik. He’s always been a bit of a steaky scorer, even if he has a down year, it just helps with re-signing him for cheaper.

Very happy he's doing well down there, but I would keep him there for now.

Over the past 3 seasons prior to this year, he had only played 22 AHL games. I want to see him get some games and get comfortable playing prior to throwing him in the NHL. VGK wasn't patient enough with him, and I feel like if NSH does the same thing then he won't ever develop properly. And he's building some chemistry hopefully with some other players that could fight for roster spots next season like Afanasyev and others.

Absolutely. As a VGK fan, it kinda looked like how Atlanta (RIP) handled prospects -- throw them to the wolves. Of course, the Wolves were their AHL team at the time, so I could've used a better joke.

Surprised me at the time, but I'm assuming he just didn't mesh well. I feel like that's why teams are always so hesitant to actually pull the trigger on trade away guys with term left...all of the sudden, around 6 months later, you're back in a position where you need to fill that hole that you dug.

Pretty much 4 main reasons they traded him:
- Arvy just hasn't been the same player since the Bortuzzo incident
- Hynes wasn't using him like Laviolette, so he wasn't as successful and wasn't getting as many offensive chances (I'm pretty sure he actually requested a trade because of this, not positive though)
- Long-term contract and wanting to shed salary (same reason they traded Ellis)
- Wanting to get younger and make room and opportunity for younger players like Tolvanen, Kunin, Tomasino, etc.

Whether it's worth it or not or whether it was the right move, I think those are the main reasons why the deal happened.

Yeah, you're definitely right. I just hate digging a hole that you then need to fill in. I think Tomasino is going to be a solid player going forward.

The Arvidsson move was also to avoid the expansion draft so was made on the cheap IMO.

Have you given any thought to renting Phil Kessel (at 50% off)?

I know that Poile has tried to nab him in the past. Pretty sure Kessel nixed any potential deal though. I wonder if he’s changed his mind.

I think it would depend on the cost though. I’m not sure I would go over a 2nd for him (maybe adding a b-/c+ prospect). And NSH wouldn’t even need the retention since they have so much cap space.

If NSH buys, a top 6 winger and a 3C would be the biggest needs for this team. So Kessel checks one of those boxes.
