Hockey Canada with no NHL players

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2021-22 Custom Team
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 13, 2021
Published: Dec. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Played by the rules of no NHL contracts allowed, which includes signed prospects and players with two-way deals in the AHL.

Unsigned/Undrafted prospects are denoted by having $925k contracts. Bit of a who's-who with some of the older names but I think Hockey Canada would be wise to bring a bit of their high-end skilled youth as opposed to the Spengler Cup hopefuls. Good chance for the brass to atone to the Savoie brothers at the very least.

If there are better defencemen, name em! I went off of best-guess and had a preference for years of AHL-and-above levels of performance.

It wouldn't be as guaranteed but I think this team would medal.

That's for them to decide but I don't see why they wouldn't allow players of exceptional status to go. Try having fun once and a while.

Don't know how I missed him. His production is pretty good for the KHL.

If @JaredOfLondon is correct in the CHL emulating what the NHL does, I could see him up there.

it's more so about the travel issues. a player with a positive test in china would have to quarantine for something like 5 weeks. Over a month without a top player on a jr team is a lot. Not to mention all the political stuff on top of it

I know it is a thought exercise, but a Spengler Cup type team (with KHL add ons too) I think would be more likely.

Is the Spengler roster posted anywhere? I didn't look to see if it was up.

And while I agree with the philosophy, I also think that's why Canada lost during the last Olympics. They just didn't have the skill to overcome any of their mistakes or the strength of the other teams. The NCAA additions would have to be a must, no?

I feel like Canada won't bring too many kids, like probably Power, maybe Johnson and C. Savoie, but probably not anyone undrafted. They've got so many other options like Curtis Valk, Brendan Leipsic, Spencer Foo, and Hunter Shinkaruk up front, also Darren Dietz and Jesse Blacker on D (literally just looking at high scoring Canadian KHLers lol). Also I looked up the Chinese national team and they have 5 guys named Zhang lmfao

I will say that Pirri-E. Staal-Verroneau / Power-Demers / Dubnyk isn't a terrible starting lineup considering this would hypothetically be like our 24th best team lol

I don't think they bring Leipsic (or Virtanen) for their recent off-ice conduct. Hockey Canada may be run by 200 hockey men but I don't think they're that tone deaf.

I think Foo may qualify for the Chinese roster if the IIHF grants them that workaround that's been passed around. The only reason I didn't put him on the list.

Yeah I heard something about Foo playing for China, he'd easily be their best player if so, otherwise he'd probably make this team Canada's middle six somewhere. I have absolutely no faith in hockey Canada ever and would not be surprised one bit if Leipsic and Virtanen were both on the top line lol, but I would also hope they aren't included.

For the Spengler Cup, I think they have only announced some of the coaching staff and not the roster yet. I agree that having highly skilled kids from the CHL and NCAA would be great.

If the reason for the NHL not going is something other than league outbreaks, such as the NHLPA saying no because of concerns over quarantines or political issues then I think the CHL and NCAA would balk at sending their players.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think the NCAA has the authority over its players the same way the CHL has over its players. I think the college kids could go at their own discretion so long as Hockey Canada made the call.

I guess they'd be governed by their schools instead of the NCAA, like how Michigan stopped Power from going to the World Juniors last year, but I don't know.

Separately, I found the roster for the Channel One Cup which looks to be a tune up tournament ahead of the Spengler Cup, so I would suspect alot of those names would be similar to the Spengler Cup Team. https://hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/team-canada/men/national/2021-22/channel-one-cup/stats/team-rosters?teamid=647

Edit: maybe not, as most are KHL players

Worst-case scenario the players could just cut ties with their school, go to the Olympics, then sign with their teams and play in the AHL. So long as they don't commit to the CHL they should be AHL-eligible. I doubt any of them do it should it come down to it.

And yes, Channel One precedes the Spengler. Good find!
