Description
The thing is, when Canes offer sheeted Kotkaniemi it seems they originally planned for him to be playing on the wing, but he's been a bit disappointment in that role. As a center though he's playing quite well. Problem is that Canes already has a fair amount of centers as we speak, so Kotkaniemi is a bit of a waste used in a sheltered bottom-6 role, especially with that cap hit.

Now if they were really after a winger, could Fiala, who's been rumored to be on the market, be an option? It's rumored that Wild might be willing to move the guy for a center.

Could there be mutual interest in swapping these young players? Obviously Fiala currently is the better player of the two so Canes would probably have to add, but as framework for Wild imo it makes sense for them to add a younger center in exchange to Fiala, and for Wild adding a scoring top-6 winger helps their current contending run more than Kotkaniemi in a sheltered role. This year their term and cap hit is close to similar, so there's no huge need for massive cap gymnastics to make this work.

Umm no. Minnesota isn't trading fiala, cheaper better player for a player whose more expensive, and worse. If fiala is traded, will only be for a top 6c.

I know Fiala's apparently had some issues, but I can't see Minny being too fired up to take on that QO. Without Fiala, they've got $17.2ish mil to sign 10 players. Add KK's QO, and they're in trouble.

Could obviously move some other stuff around, but that's a lot of money to tie up with a big question mark, IMO.

He won't be more expensive for long, and given he's 4 years younger and developing he's not that far from top-6 C. If he was that already, no one would consider moving winger for the guy.

You could say Kotkaniemi now is that Fiala Wild traded Granlund for a few years ago - a prospect with higher ceiling, bbeing bit stuck in his current team's system, currently worse than the player traded for. It's a future investment.

Technically after this year's performance they could sign the guy mid-season for cheaper. This assuming of course Kotkaniemi agrees to this. Say his numbers won't rise from here and Canes leave him without qualifying offer, he's going to lose more money if he becomes an UFA.

I don't see the wild being able to sign either Fiala or Kotkaniemi past this year with our cap issues

This again. It's a bit hypothetical sure, but technically it works.

I'm sort of on the fence with his status, tbh. Like, if it were me, I'd probably be testing free agency. I mean, it's hard to know what he'd get paid, but Carolina is such a deep team that the poor guy is only playing 11 minutes a night. Hard to put up numbers like that. At the same time, if the Canes were interested offering a reasonable extension, I don't see any issue that way either.

Well certainly they can't be paying him $6M+ to use him in bottom-6 role, that's for sure. And given they paid for him 1st+ I have to assume they wouldn't want to give up on him this soon, unless the value can be used in other way, like in this post. He does put up relatively good points considering his sheltered ice time.

You know, I actually don't hate the KK signing, even as a 1 year rental. He's shown himself to be a valuable performer in the playoffs, and it was certainly a good opportunity to see if he could take the next step statistically. *If* KK was a pending UFA, I've gotta think he would have returned a pretty penny at the deadline, so spending a 1st+3rd on him for a full season doesn't seem too bad.

Perhaps this is greedy of me, but I hope we see more offersheets in the future (After my beloved Zegras and Drysdale are signed, of course...)

I agree. Since there's the offer sheet system in place I'd much rather want to see it being used instead of it staying there unused. It helps weaker teams with little cap space retooling quicker and shortens the time period of leading teams very tight in terms of cap space. For instance, TB would be very different team if Cirelli and Sergachev had been offer sheeted back when they were RFAs with no contract.

KK isn't half bad as an asset, but if feels very weird to consider a 21 year old a rental strengthening. It's a very unique situation, as normally these kind of assets are always 25+ in terms of age.

The original plan with Kotkaniemi was to offersheet him just to get him, but it wasn't necessarily for 2021-22. The initial rumours were that Carolina was willing to trade the 1st and 3rd for him, and when Montréal declined that, the offersheet was their chance.

Their long-term plan is sign him at ~4x4 and put him at 2C next year when Trocheck's contract expires and some team throws a pile of cash at a 28 year old 2C. Fiala's probably going to be more expensive than that, and when the team needs to re-sign Bear, DeAngelo, and Necas, that would put them into some pretty serious cap trouble.

As much as I like Fiala, and think a Svech-Aho-Fiala line would be fun to watch, I wouldn't do this from Carolina's perspective.

Kotkanimei was brought in with the idea of being the long term replacement for Trocheck/Staal in upcoming years. Fiala is a great player, but this doesn't work for the Canes future.

& Minnesota is a win now team. In addition, Minnesota has Marco Rossi, Joel Eriksson ek, and nico sturm. Also has Ryan Hartman. So why would Minnesota trades fiala for lesser player, and not a top 6c? Marat k Is also coming before year is over

The problem here is that the Wild would trade Fiala to acquire a top6 center or gain cap space and future assets. I don't see Kotkaniemi being a top6 C and his next deal would automatically be too pricey for us
