Long term cap purposes. If they signed Buchnevich to that much, and signed Goodrow, because they wanted Goodrow, they would’ve been screwed long term. With Fox getting 9.5M, Zibanejad getting 8.5M, Georgiev, Kakko, Strome etc needing new contacts, it was a smart move. Blais also isn’t bad…. He is still young, and has 4 points in 15 games so far. Given the right opportunity, he could go off! I think they could’ve gotten more for him, but I see why they did it.

I don’t know but he’s the best Blues player I think I’ve seen since Tarasenko’s first few years

Zibanejad at 5v5 without Buch has been grimace and Buch has taken off without him. Interesting dynamic those two had when you dig into the analytics. That 8.5 mill could get really sloppy

Definitely! That is way too much money for Zibanejad, but that’s why they traded him. They had to because Trouba, and Kreider are unmovable. Their contracts are way too big.

Might get abused for saying this, but perhaps they should’ve signed Buch and traded Zibanejad wink

He really is a bad GM. I hate that people give him credit for what Gorton built.

Some would say cap space.

I would say because Drury (and Sather/Dolan) are stupid.

I’m still shocked they didn’t get a 1st+ considering what Kapanen got

Because the Rangers are paying a lot of salary bonuses to their RFAs. Its penalizing their cap just about every season. That becomes a big problem next year when these RFAs start getting their first big deals and the Rangers start entering into serious cap problem. They are already going to lose Strome to cap problems, it would have been even worse if they had kept Buch.

Yes you may haha. But yah, I agree, and they could’ve gotten a good young center man for Zibanejad.

Oh lol, yeah it’s funny I remember looking at numbers back when Buch was in NY, and all of them showed Buch carrying Mika, kinda made me question of the model was giving value to the wrong guy. This year Buch is playing amazing and Mika really struggles 5v5. Idk I’m always curious when two guys play a ton of minutes together who is the one really driving it.

I went with Buch when I saw him keeping Laf on the 1st line to end last season

Unfortunate that now Buch is playing in a small market team like St. Louis and with the only guy non-STL people talk about (Tarasenko.) He’s having a mark stone type year but gets the credit stollen by the flashier Kyrou and Tarasenko.

Buch was looked at as a one hit wonder and someone who never played a complete game until last season even though he trended upwards and improved literally every season here and they were willing to sacrifice him for "grit" and "toughness" when he was willing to get in the dirty areas more than anyone else on the team the last few years, 1 trade I'll never understand

Buch @4x 5.8m is way too much, for most teams, hence the reward. Enjoy it while it lasts, till things ramp up anyway, then soft shell Buch's hiding behind refs takes over his game lol

Zibs had a NTC. But as you suggest just keep Buch...if they had the cap this season, and worried about the centre position this summer. Still could've traded Buch this summer.

19-7-4. When was the last time a Rangers team started a season this well? Yeah, Drury is a moron.
