Wow this future team would be alright,

IMO they may try and save some money spent on McNabb to resign Broberg and Holloway/a goalie improvement. Just two 3 million ish 3rd pairing dmen may be an overpayment compared to a guy like Koekoek.

I do think a big part of the oilers future depends on how well Skinner develops

Barrie is an elite offensive defenseman on a good contract, and well liked by his teammates. We should grab him if a deal like this comes up, but the Oilers aren't moving him for a 2nd.

I think Xavier Bourgault will be on the team by 23-24, probably Carter Savoie as well. Niemelainen is showing well now and Samorukov is widely considered better than the big Finn, at least one of these guys makes it IMO.

We have dahlin and will have power by then. No sense in trading futures whilst rebuilding for an older one dimensional defensemen who doesn't compliment our high end younger defensemen

Actually I think Barrie would be a fantastic compliment to Power. He'd be an upgrade on Colin Miller, whose contract ends after this season.

To be clear, I'm not saying to trade for him, but if he's available for just a 2nd (he won't be) then you do that all day.

Sabres could use more defensive defenseman, or defenseman that are good in both ends, don’t have much need for an offensive specialist.

Barrie would replace Miller.

I have the idea of giving up Kubalik for a 1st, but wouldn't be surprised if it happens. He's started the season in a down year but is getting hot again.

Career Stats = .63ppg, .35gpg

Good luck trying to find that kind of player late in the 1st round

And that's exactly why the organization is widely considered one of the most dysfunctional in the league.

Look at the push back here:

More than the Sabres got back for Jack Eichel and Power has not played a single NHL game.
Power for Dumba, Kähkönen, Lambos, 2022 1st round pick (MIN), 2023 2nd round pick (MIN) and 2022 3rd round pick (MIN).
Add in this trade essentially Power for Dumba, Barrie etc.
IMO most NHL teams would love to have a defense composed of:
Dahlin - Jokiharju
Hagg - Dumba
Samuelsson - Barrie
Johnson IMO could be inserted over Samuelsson as his defense may be stronger than Mattias'.
Resign Pysyk then they are 7 deep.
BTW I like Power but that return is insane.

You certainly have a good point about value there, no question. However, the Ristolainen, Reinhart and Eichel trades signal a full-on rebuild, and I think the organization needs to follow through on that. That means no trading top prospects, young players or first rounders unless you're getting similar, better assets in return.

The goal for this year and next should be foundational, both drafts are very good at the top and the ability to add at least 2 more marquee pieces is critical.

If a deal like the Barrie one above comes along next summer, you take that all day. Then you pair him with Power and flip him at the deadline with 50% retained for a 1st + prospect. Using cap space to turn a late 2nd into a late 1st + prospect is just good asset management.

Yes 100%, Barrie for a 2nd is a no brainer.
I cannot see any reason Karmanos would say no to that deal.

I was presuming the Barrie and Dumba trades would be off season.
While I really like Power that is a bigger return than Jack Eichel and Buffalo needs RHD.
IMO it would be exciting to see 2 established NHL RHD added to the team along with an extra first in 2022 and a player drafted in the first round of 2021.

But you and all of the other Buffalo ACGM's could be correct that a team should not trade away a first OA, even if for an over payment.
