They Have To Try

Description
Though I'm a Flyers fan, this team has to try to make the playoffs next year. For the purpose of this thread, we're going to assume Bernier doesn't play for the foreseeable future which sucks.

I know a decent chunk of the perceived problem is the coaching but I can't do anything about that here. I'm going to focus on goaltending and offense. I'm also for the purpose of this AGM assuming Holtz and Mukhamadullin aren't ready yet.

Could maybe be a 4th instead, depending how he finishes the year.

  1. Johnsson, Andreas
Additional Details:
Tricky thing with Johnsson is he has to waive it to go somewhere, and I think he would want to go somewhere he feels like he could get some more ice time and still be competitive. I think that puts an Arizona or Buffalo out of the running, and probably Ottawa though I considered that one. Also considered a Florida trade brining Hornqvist back but he would have to waive too.

I figured he could be a replacement for Namestnikov and with only the one year left its not a huge commitment. What if he had some salary retained?

Namestikov loves it here and is a great fit, he'll likely be extended

Nice.

Not sold on Tartar at 2LW, a better option would be Johnson to PHI for JVR. (not sure PHI would want Johnsson but they might like the diff in salary)

I agree that Tatar isn't the best fit. I don't see that specific trade going through since they're rivals who both want to get in but I'm sure there's a name out there on a team that would work.

I'm glad you've got that direct access to Stevie to confirm this

Vladdy has said this numerous times and he talks extremely well about Detroit because the interactions he’s had since he was a kid. Not exactly sure about your point unless you don’t know Vladdy’s background and Detroit. Steve even drafted him.

I just was enjoying the certainty of the comment and appreciated the insight, no disrespect meant.

I mean, I said "likely", not "certainly"... My point is, we're not going to to trade for depth, we'll promote within, or go to free agency, with our own free agents that are good fits and want to be here, like Names, being the top targets.

Yeah I was not intending to come off as rude, I apologize. In my head it was like "damn this guys got Yzerman on speed dial". I understand your points and see what you mean. Not like Johnsson is a bad fit per se, but that's a move to make maybe a season or two ago rather than now as you're knocking on the door.

I think Johnsson would be a great fit in Detroit. He's a lot better than Smith, Gagner, and Rowney (and maybe even better than Namestnikov) and we don't know what will happen with trades and injuries. I'll happily take Andreas off your hands for a 4th.

First of all, thanks for doing a Devils AGM.

Now, I don't like the Johnsson trade. He's been really useful and is a tad underrated.
I wouldn't want to move him unless Devils are out of the playoff picture come TDL in 2023, in which case you'd try and move him for futures / prospects.

It doesn't make too much sense in going for Rust in the offseason as there's an abundance of wingers in the Devil's system.
Lankinen's fine given the assumptions you made but I do think Bernier's gonna be ready to go for next season as he's likely having surgery in the near future.
Rutta idk, rather resign Subban for a similar cap hit tbh.

Bratt and Zacha are short a million each, Wood's QO is 3.5 million, doubt he's signing for anything less than that.
The contracts are way too short as well, especially for Bratt. He's a bonafide first liner and part of Devils long-term core.

Lines are decent, two things though:
1. Wood shouldn't be playing with any center other than McLeod. They complement each others game perfectly.
2. The only way for Zacha to be viable is to play him with either Hughes or Hischier. He does more harm than good in any other circumstance.

All in all, this is overall decent imo. I rate this 3 / 5.

PS. using your players, my line suggestion would be:

Zacha - Hischier - Rust
Tatar - Hughes - Sharangovich
Kuokkanen - Mercer - Bratt
Wood - McLeod - Bastian
Boqvist
