Can Toronto afford to keep Campbell if teams offer him this

Created by: mk458
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 26, 2021
Published: Dec. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not a serious AGM so don't read to much into this. But I'm curios if Toronto fans think they'll be able to keep Campbell if he gets nominated for the Vezina this season. Can they afford him at over 6 million if they move a guy like Kerfoot? Is re-signing Mikheyev considered a high priority? Toronto fans let me know your thoughts

I will shoot myself if Campbell leaves. Between Hyman, a lack of post season success, and years and years of pain, the Leafs deserve atleast one good thing.

On a more relevant point, I think the Leafs likely try to sign Campbell before the offseason. He likely (hopefully) takes a slight paycut considering he evidently likes Toronto, but we are still looking at 5 × 5 here. Toronto can easily facilitate a cap hit like that by moving Kerfoot, who has quite a bit of value, and Holl. Campbell wants to stay in Toronto.

If they extend him before July 13, other teams won't have a chance to make any offers.

Makes sense, and I hope Toronto is able to do sign him before free agency. It's just that Jack has waited soooooo long to get his shot in the NHL, he's never been a bad goalie. He never got a fair chance in Dallas, and he had to compete with Quick and Peterson for years in LA. This in Campbell's one shot at a big payday. Guess we'll wait and see

Ohh, that's tough. Gotta think anything over 6 mil they let him walk. I think he stays at around 5 mil long term in Toronto.

There's another factor though. Campbell has had mental health issues in the past, and can be harder on himself then the majority of goalies it seems if his team loses 3-2 (even if they were 3 goals he had no chance at).

So I really don't see him going purely for $$. Fit will hold a lot of weight for him. I really don't see him falling into the Grubauer trap. That probably ends very badly for him.

Not saying he 100% re-signs in Toronto, but I also don't see him leaving Toronto for another $500K per year (or something like that).

Long story short, if Leafs can offer him a reasonable deal, he'll be a Leaf for awhile.

I think he’ll stay.

A price tag can range anywhere from 4 - 5.5 IMO.

I bet he takes a discount and goes near 4.5 - 5.

Obviously this is his biggest chance at a huge payday, but a discount will happen for 2 main reasons.
-he is a very genuine guy and loves Toronto (the players, fans, city, etc..
-as mentioned by @mk458 above, he never got a real chance anywhere else. Despite being a good goalie, he never got a true chance at being a starter.
Toronto took a chance on him, eased him into it, and now he’s proving to be one of the best goalies in the league. I think the fact that Toronto did that for him is something he doesn’t take lightly. He recognizes that this is a really good place to be (despite the lack of playoff success). The organization is one of the best.

Edit: I also don’t think Campbell is in it for the money at all. I think the team fit is more important for him than the money.

I think people might be underestimating. He's 29 with less than $5M in career earnings. He should be seeking a significant payday and likely will. I'd estimate at least $6M x 5 years. If Toronto can get him to commit before free agency, that's in the ballpark. If not, he'll get it on the market.

Can the Oilers afford him.? You have Smith and Klefbom on LTIR. Is that going to continue all of next year?

IMO the Leafs can't afford him next season partly due to the Ritchie and Mrazrek contracts. What teams have that cap that might want Campbell. Hawks and even the Cup contender Colorado.

Yeah no clue if the Oilers can afford him, like I said in the description this isn't a serious AGM, just wanted to know if Toronto fans think they could afford him. And I really hope Klefbom is back next year, but I'm not holding out hope

It's either people are underestimating his desire to get paid, or people are underestimating how much value he puts in fit.

Guess we'll all know the answer within the next 7 months or so.
