most likely No Letang but Geno takes a discount

Description
I think the most likely scenario is for next year......

there have been very few rumours but those that have surfaced....
Geno would be willing to take short term and a discount (I heard neighbourhood of $6M)
Letang thinks he can play forever and wants another big cheque (at least $8M/4 yrs)
Extention talks with Rust went no where and he wouldn't settle for $4-5M

all this leads me to think out of 71/58/17 only Geno stays....
i hope that doesn't happen but at the same time I do not feel comfortable giving Letang $8M+ and Rusty $6M+ with any more than 3 years on either...

i wish offer sheets were more prevalent, but even if a GM were to do a Kotkaniemi 2.0, it would not be Hextall...
I'm going for low risk under the radar moves bc I feel that's what Hextall would do...
but with a ton of $ available and Letang/Rust walking to FA, he will have to make a splash in FA or he will lose the fanbase...
also looking to keep/add truculence for Burkie...

notes:
also we can't count on any major improvements in young players or prospects so no Poulin/Legare with Sid or Marino as the #1RHD...for example...
i feel like a mini retool will occur as Hextall will change out some of the Rutherford players for his preferences....Ruhwedel out in favour of Friedman as the #7D for example...
i think Dumoulin, rust, zucker, pettersson are prime candidates to be replaced as as Rutherford guys with bigger contracts...

now with that in mind....to the ACGM...

Pens fans give me your thoughts on the trade values and who you'd want to see Hextall/Burke bring in...
also vote in the poll who (Geno/Tanger/Rusty) stays, who goes?

not a lot of these trades make sense.....I think these moves pull them closer to a lottery team than a playoffs team

In a couple years the core will be past the point of contending and all the playoff runs will be worth it

Agreed here. These are just odd trades that take back far less than they're sending.

Yama isnt very good or hasnt played well. he had a break out season 2 years ago and has been fairly lackluster since. Kap is the better player so idk why you would pay and downgrade.

Hartman is nearly a ppg player and his cap hit is amazing. i dont see MP being able to fetch him / i dont see how the wild could afford the cap difference

the LA trade to me is confusing but ill explain

ARVIDSSON is better than Zucker
BD is really good but underrated bc he doesnt score a ton of points... Walker isnt bad but not BD here we go

Guentzel replaced by Yamamoto major loss
Kapanen replaced by ARVIDSSON lateral
Dumo replaced by Chychrun worth it but to achieve this trade you massively downgrade at wing
Zadorov and Miller money should go to Letang and keep Kap + dumo and picks/ prospects to dump Zucker

i would sign MAlkin and Tanger to extension
trade MP play POJ
use a pick / prospect to dump Zucker

i would stack draft picks and keep prospects if i was the Penguins... They are still one of the better teams in the East. I dont see and player able to take over Letangs minutes. i would keep this core and try my luck winning a cup wi them

Minnesota isn't trading Ryan Hartman. This is a straight up bad deal for Minnesota. Minnesota doesn't need a d, and isn't trading their cheap good current 1c

Because this is an off-season trade, we'd be exchanging two NHL veterans with two years left on their contracts who total $6.9 million in cap for two one-season rentals who are older than their opposite numbers and cost $9.6 million against the cap. Arvidsson is much more valuable to us than Zucker would be and while Dumoulin is a temporary improvement on Walker, a good left-handed-forward prospect and a third don't make up for the discrepancy. This is an easy offer for the Kings to decline.

???

Arvidsson = 14 points in 23 games and plays RW on one of our top two lines
Zucker = 11 points in 30 games, wouldn't play RW on any of our lines, one year older, one year less term and $1.25 million more against the cap

Wagner isn't as good as Dumoulin but is younger and signed for another year at a cheaper cap hit and fits our team better.

Poulin isn't likely to jump over any of the five left-handed forwards we already have in the system ahead of him, and that 2023 third-round pick won't hit the roster until 2026 at the earliest, if ever

Poulin is a trash prospect. I'll be the first to admit that. He's not the issue I have.

Yamamoto is an interesting player, but to me he's a step down from Kap (at least at the moment) and IMO EDM should be sending more back, not the other way around.

The LA trade is IMO paying a premium to move Zucker to downgrade as a whole. I'm definitely a fan of Arvidsson, but Walker is a major step down from Dumo who's still signed to another season at a reasonable cap hit. This defense is a MAJOR step down. If Zadorov/Miller is our 2nd pair then anything we put up front is irrelevant. We will get walked on the regular. As highly as I regard Chychrun and Marino, this defense is awful.

The net effect of these trades as a whole IMO is less than we're sending out.

Edmonton and Minni really don't have the cap for those trades. Certainly LA doesn't do that trade. Zucker certainly doesn't provide value.

Just because Letang wants what he’s worth doesn’t mean the pens won’t give it to him. I think 8 mil x 4 is a good deal for Letang. The nhl has lightened up on the 35+ contracts so it won’t kill the pens later on when they are rebuilding anyways. I’d be ok if they kept Geno at 3x6 and Letang at 4x8. They will have over 30 million in cap. That’s only 14 mil between the 2 players. If rust doesn’t want to stay and take a discount, that’s fine. They will either pay him, sign ERod (who should be cheaper) and trade Kappy or will let him walk and sign Kappy & ERod. That Zucker guy was also pretty good with Crosby. They could just replace Rust with that guy on Crosby’s other wing too.
