If Buffalo drafted optimally 2016 - Current

Created by: dls9
Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 22, 2021
Published: Dec. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I wanted to see what the Sabres would look like if they had drafted a little differently from 2016 onwards.

Rules:

1) I HAVE to swap out every first round pick from 2016 onwards with a different player from the same draft

2) I can ONLY pick a player within 5 picks after the actual Sabres pick. For example, I believe the best player from the 2016 draft (After Matthews) is Charlie McAvoy. But, I think that player was too far away from the actual pick to be considered realistic. I set the threshold at 5 picks.

Question - is this team better or worse than it is now?
Trades
1.
TBL
  1. Jokiharju, Henri
Additional Details:
If the Sabres picked Sergachev (2016 pick 9) instead of Nylander (2016 pick 8) , then the Sabres wouldn't have moved Nylander for Jokiharju
2.
MTL
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey
Additional Details:
Sabres select Nick Suzuki (2017 pick 13) instead of Casey Mittelstadt (2017 pick 8).
3.
OTT
  1. Dahlin, Rasmus
Additional Details:
As great as Dahlin (2018 pick 1) has been, Tkachuk (2018 pick 4) is a unique player. Plus, with selecting Sergachev in 2016, the sabres don't need their 1D
4.
ANA
  1. Cozens, Dylan
Additional Details:
Cozens (2019 pick 7) is fine, but Zegras (2019 pick 9) is Elite.
5.
FLA
  1. Quinn, Jack
Additional Details:
Lundell is already a great two way center for Florida, and could be added to the great lineup of C the Sabres would have picked up in the last few drafts.

Cozens was barely worse than Zegras at the WJC, Z has the advantage of playing behind Getz most of this season, as well as a strong D-core and goaltending. I dont think that is an easy swap to make

You could argue that if Buffalo had drafted this team, then Eichel would not have demanded a trade.

They would still stink because their management stinks.

I mean everyone can go back and do this to thier drafts but most of these guys werent some reach pick or considered crazy. Like I get looking at Dahlin today and thinking that but everyone makes that pick at the time.

Of course if the Sabres had drafted correctly, they wouldn't have had such high draft picks. More importantly 15m in UFA could have been spent a lot wiser than Skinner and Okposo.

@delneggs pretty much hit this one on the nose, Eichel biggest issue and why he wanted out was poor team management, poor facilities, and below average medical staff.
Buffalo has actually drafted well but they manage their picks and prospects poorly over the years.

aside from nylander none of their picks are that bad tbh. mittelstadt is eh but he was putting it together at the end of last season and can still probably be a useful nhl player. i think cozens is going to be really good and quinn looks amazing in the AHL right now.

Why this again man? I don’t like these at all! Literally every team in the NHL could do this and be a better team if they courage went back now, and redrafted. If it was a redraft, Buffalo wouldn’t get Zegras, New York would. They need a good center man, I bet you, they would’ve picked him. So yes, this thing is horrible, because you probably wouldn’t get a lot of those played, as the teams before would’ve picked them. Also, if they drafted that well, Eichel wouldn’t have requested a trade, and they wouldn’t have signed Skinner to that huge deal. After they drafted some guys, they wouldn’t get continuous top 5 picks to get the others, because they probably would’ve been better and did better signings.

This is very controversial, since we have not even seen some drafts yet, and some may look completely different in the future. It is unlikely that Tampa was mistaken in choosing Hedman over Evander Kane.

I guess how many teams passed on Point?
The only picks that matter are the one taken directly after a certain player.
2014 to 2016 That would be Draisaitl, Strome and Sergachev taken after Reinhart, Eichel, Nylander.
Draisaitl could be a Hall of Famer, Sam may never be an All star.
Strome was a bust, Nylander cannot break into the NHL with two different teams, Sergachev could be an All Star.
That my friends is poor drafting!

I agree. I just thought it would be fun to look at how it would be if the Sabres drafted Zegras instead of Cozens, Tkachuk instead of Dahlin, etc etc.

Because I thought it would be fun to look at the lines and see what others thought ... I didn't think it was hurting anybody to share it.

I understand that there is uncertainty with drafts. 2019 - the Sabres needed a C they took a C in Cozens and he will fill the need. But I thought it was fun to explore the option of Zegras, Tkachuk, etc.
