Description

The Severson trade is modelled after the Muzzin trade before it and done during the 21-22 season. Muzzin was a bit better of a defenseman at the time but Severson is right handed so it should balance out pretty well. A 1st round pick, a good prospect in Abramov and a lesser prospect in Hollowell.

LTIR players are people the Leafs would need to move out to make it work in 22-23. 2 mil in cap space should be more than enough to make up for any short falls you might find in the RFA contracts.

Muzzin is a decent comparable for Severson, but this trade can be made better for both parties.
If Devils were to move Severson Leafs could do well with salary retention which in turn could net Devils a more interesting prospect than Abramov, like Niemala or Amirov.
Not that I think it's too likely Devils move him anyway.

Amirov it's more likely but with how little he's played this year I'm not sure Dubas would be comfortable moving him as of yet. Things could change but the organization views him as a top 6 winger.

As you can see by the post, the cap doesn't work at all. 14m on LTIR just can't be wished away. Especially 5.6m Muzzin and his M NTC. No team on his trade list doesn't have cap for him without sending cap back to the Leafs. So really it's a big overpayment for Severson. Of course so many think other so so players are the magic formula for the Leafs.

100% agree with Paulie here. Niemela, Villanueve, or Liljegren would likely have to be included for Devils to hit “yes” for Leafs. I don’t think Amirov would be someone Devils would target.

Also, Devils would likely need to retain half….and take a contract back, not sure who (Holl, Ritchie, ??).
