2021-22 TDL finish the teardown

Created by: swinny
Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 24, 2021
Published: Dec. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Turris, Kyle
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Edmonton need a 3C, and Eakin can fill that roll on a short term economical deal. An offensive upgrade on Ryan at this point. Sabres take on Turris for cap purposes, which should allow the Oilers to seek out that rumored LD.

Eakin alone may fetch a 4th, but given he is an upgrade and taking on Turris, going for the pick flip seems reasonable.
EDM
  1. Eakin, Cody
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (BUF)
2.
BUF
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
I am running with an idea shared by @NYR1983

They said they would take.on Dadanov at half price for a 2nd. Well, why not Okposo then, who is having a resurgent season? Rangers need a 2RW, and Okposo for one more season beyond this can certainly do that at $3million.

This pick would be conditional: be the lower of the Rangers and Blues picks..... it is Okposo.
NYR
  1. Okposo, Kyle ($3,000,000 retained)
3.
BUF
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (ANA)
ANA
  1. Butcher, Will
Additional Details:
The Ducks are 100% in it, and I have to think will be looking for a bottom pairing LD...... on a rotation it seems right now Butcher comes in on an expiring deal, and should round out the Ducks blueline nicely.
4.
BUF
  1. Ludvig, John
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
The Panthers are likely not willing to move a higher pick given they don't pick until then3rd round this year, so went with this approach.

Ludvig is a prototypical stay at home D with size and edge. I would say he is about 2 years away from NHL duty - about that time when the Sabres should be ready to try and compete again. Type of player the organization should be developing as a shut down guy you can depend on.

3rd rounder is for retention.
FLA
  1. Miller, Colin ($1,925,000 retained)
Additional Details:
The Panthers are a real threat this year, so I think Zito will be aggressive in adding at the deadline. From what I see, the Cats can stand an upgrade in the bottom pairing of the blueline - so the Zito will go back to Buffalo to get Miller.

It's a move that makes a tonne of sense: get away from platooning the #6 D, adds a that can move up the line up in case of injury, can pitch in on the PP if needed. Miller isn't flashy, but his game is more efficient than his time with Buffalo would indicate.
5.
BUF
  1. 2023 4th round pick (WPG)
WPG
  1. Hinostroza, Vinnie
Additional Details:
Jets get a reliable bottom 6 forward who can chip in offensively for a playoff spot push..... seems it is something they lack.

I’d rather keep Okposo for the veteran leadership he brings.

Is that why they are still loosing?

First time since the Sabres signed Okposo they can move him for an actual asset. Time to sell.

Just bc @NYR1983 would be willing to take Dadonov….
that doesn’t mean that Okposo is movable for an asset in the actual NHL, especially for a 2nd

VERY doubtful imo

Dado at 50% retention isn’t bad, okposo is having a decent year compared to his recent seasons but would still be tough to move. At 50% retained he might be movable as a rental but if he has more term then it’s probably unlikely. Also we aren’t the ideal destination

If you can get a decent asset then it’s not a bad idea. I’d probably do it too. Same vein, the point of “leadership “ is also a good move. Okposo plays a gritty game and the kids will need to follow that path so they aren’t soft. Some players won’t make it as the PP stars and will have to adapt to other roles like blocking shots and checking, this is where he would lead. Understanding how to adapt when you become a small fish in a big pond and your skill level just isn’t at that level.

Wasn’t trying to call you out….
Just letting @swinny know that his logic doesn’t translate to the real NHL

Okposo does have another year after this
And MAYBE there’s a team that would “take” him
But i highly doubt we’d get anything of substance back for him
He may be having a decent season,
but he’d still be a Cap dump- even at 50% off

And just bc nyr1983 would take him,
doesn’t mean an ACTUAL NHL GM would make the same deal for Okposo

There’s just no way it’s gonna happen

This team is probably gonna end up with 4 or so rookies out of the gate next year, added to an already very young team. Need some vets to show them the ropes and help their development. Okposo is a co-captain and is really the heart of the team, getting rid of him would probably not be good for the locker room.

🤔🤔🤔

So Okposo led a group of youngsters like Eichel, Olofsson, Reinhart, Risto etc.

Now he is the answer to yet another restart in Buffalo?

I am going to take the night to wrap my head around that logic.

I never say never. The idea of cost certainty over diving into a UFA market that is awefully thin this year may have GMs thinking along these lines.

Whether it's a Dadanov at $2.5 million or an Okposo at $3 million, cost certainty in a flat cap world changes thinking......

And given the Sens managed to actually move Dadanov last year (which I didn't think was possible) proves that anything can happen under a set of circumstances.

But dude….
ABSOLUTELY NONE of that means someone would give up a 2ND ROUND PICK for him though

You’re dreaming
No real life GM is gonna do that

Okposo isn’t ever a “C” on a team, but he can provide leadership to those who won’t be stars. The leader of the bottom 6 kind of deal. He was never going to lead an Eichel, in the same way Kassian would never be a leader for McD. But if he can get the fringe middle 6 kids to add physicality to their game then it will go a long way in 5 years. Dado has had history of high level play in FLA where Okposo really only had a decent year or 2 in NYI, most don’t view them as similar players/gambles

Who know what will happen at the TDL.
It would be wonderful if Karmanos could engineer all of these trades.
If Luukkonen and Subban could play the balance of the season as they have over the past 6 games, maybe Buffalo will be buyers and not sellers.
As to the trades, MacLellan gave up a third for Mike Weber, Cody is far more valuable than Mike.
Remove the third from Buffalo as Turris is nothing but a dump at this point.
IMO Hinostroza will not be traded as he likes playing for Granato.
Okposo my be traded at the end of next season but it is unlikely he will be traded with over a year remaining on his contract.
He moved his family to Buffalo and as many other hockey players have done, he just may decided to stay here after his career is over.
The others all look very reasonable to me.

Let me close, these are my opinions which of course are very biased.
Your trades over all are very good and it would be a remarkable haul to get that many picks.
