Description
Seattle trade:
Gives Kraken an offensive puck moving PP specialist while not solid on D side could be paired with Oleksiak to make 2nd pair or Soucy on 3rd pair.

Dunn-Larsson
Oleksiak-Barrie
Soucy-Fleury/Borgen

Oilers get Donskoi who hasn't set the world on fire in Seattle but is decent middle six winger which the Oilers need.

Ottawa trade:
Zub is solid defensive RHD but only 1 year until UFA so Ottawa move him for futures. Young RW, RHD prospect and a pick (could have conditions to upgrade it). Not very likely Ottawa moves Zub but just maybe they don't think he will resign.

P.S. Still no money for a goalie unless Keith retires.

Zub is part of the core of this team, there's no reason to think he won't be re-signed

Past 4.5 years:

Barrie: 301, 44-176-220 (5th among defensemen)
Donskoi: 292, 61-86-147 (146th among forwards)

That's terrible value for Edmonton. Kind of like Hall-for -Larsson in reverse.

Ottawa passes. Zub has been our only consistently decent RHD. He'll be signed.

Try again.

Wouldn't be so sure, how certain are we that Barrie isn't being carried by McDrat?

No guaranteed he would be resigned. But if has heart set on resigning with the Sens, hey trade him for some assets, and resign him in the summer

Team might want to re-sign him but player doesn't always want to stay. Not sure why some fans don't get that.

It's not just about points.. Donskoi can actually play hockey 5v5 which the Oilers need badly. Barrie gets 40-50% of his points from PP time and Bouchard can easily cover the PP time. The trade also shaves 1 contract year off when the Oilers will need to re-sign Bouchard and hopefully finally sign a #1 Goalie.

He literally just resigned on the two year that he's on like 6 months ago. Regardless you'd need to give more to acquire him.

Yes, Zub was an RFA ofc he re-signed in Ottawa. Next time he is an UFA that's completely different

If the team thought UFA status was an issue then they would have signed him to a longer contract. Of all the players potentially touching free agency im genuinely the least worried about Zub.

The deal he signed in May is essentially a bridge contract after his first year in the league. The next one should be longer term with higher dollars like anyone else coming off a bridge playing well. He’s been in North America for barely 18 months, speaks very little English and likes Ottawa. Keep in mind he already signed with Ottawa as a free agent once and the team has gotten better and his role has gotten bigger since that first deal. Doesn’t exactly scream leaving in free agency.

Regardless, if by chance the Sens did flip him out it would likely be for more than what’s packaged above.

Look, it's entirely possible that Dorion screws the Zub file, as he did on many occasions before. I have very little faith in Dorion and think he's the worst NHL GM who works for the worst owner, so a crappy combo lol

But if we keep that aside and the fact that Zub should have been extended for 5-6 years instead (Zub would have probably taken 6 years x 4.0), the Sens should absolutely sign him to a 4-5 years extension when his deal is up, something like 5 years x 5.0

Trading him for futures would be another file that Dorion has messed up, like I said. They don't need futures, they need solid veterans to support the young core players.

I purposely quoted 4.5 years data. Since Barrie has only been with the Oilers 1.5 years (actually much less because I'm counting the 56-game season as 1 year) I think the answer is "we can be sure he isn't being carried". Barrie has been known for his offensive prowess for nearly a decade. Eighty-something games in Edmonton and suddenly he's being carried? I'm not following the logic.

Barrie is still elite when looking at even strength scoring too: NHL.com
Bouchard doesn't make Barrie redundant any more than McDavid makes Draisaitl redundant. There's room for both. In any case, even if the team does want a different look on the blue line, trading Barrie for pennies on the dollar isn't smart. At least get fair value for him. A 3rd line winger isn't that.
