Acquiring Tavares...Hall...Duchene

Created by: Mr_cap
Team: 2017-18 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 25, 2017
Published: Mar. 26, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Very optimistic about the salary cap going up.

Happens after the expansion draft (except 1st and 2nd).

Very shallow prospect pool and draft picks.

So... basically a win now situation. DEADLY.

Trades
1.
CBJ
  1. Gáborík, Marián
Additional Details:
**THIS IS THE ONLY TRADE THAT HAPPENS BEFORE THE E.DRAFT**

Jackets trade Hartnell to create cap room, get to protect Anderson.

That is why they get no 'real' return for him.

Gaborik gets sent down.
LAK
  1. Hartnell, Scott ($200,000 retained)
2.
CBJ
  1. Varlamov, Semyon ($600,000 retained)
COL
  1. Gáborík, Marián
  2. Moutrey, Nick
  3. 2018 7th round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
**Sorry, THIS AS WELL. FLIP TRADE**

So basically Avs get Gaborik (albeit for another 4 years). And trade away a huge 'money' contract in Varlamov.

They also get a big young forward (C+) to go with the deal. Bottom-6 type player that plays hard.

Moutrey is for taking extra term.
The 7th is for retaining money.
3.
CBJ
VGK
  1. Johnson, Jack
Additional Details:
With Anderson protected, their next best option would be to take Johnson.
4.
CBJ
  1. Tavares, John
Additional Details:
Agrees to sign a 7-year, 9 million per deal the year after.
NYI
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc
  2. Forsberg, Anton
  3. Milano, Sonny
  4. 2018 1st round pick (CBJ)
  5. 2019 4th round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Before this trade happens they fire Snow.

They receive an A+ potential No.1 C, a B+ wing prospect, A goalie prospect, a 1st and a 4th.
5.
CBJ
  1. Clowe, Ryane
  2. Hall, Taylor
Additional Details:
Separate trade:

Clowe for Varlamov

Reason: Clowe is retired (injury), so it's dead money. Devils can afford an extra year of Varlamov. Along with this they receive a 2nd for compensation.
NJD
  1. Bjorkstrand, Oliver
  2. Karlsson, William
  3. Varlamov, Semyon
  4. 2018 2nd round pick (CBJ)
  5. 2019 1st round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Devils get a player that can become one of the best scoring wingers in the NHL in like 3-5 years (Bjorkstrand (A)). They get another player who when put around good two-way players can really shine, skilled player (B). Also get a 1st.
6.
CBJ
  1. Duchene, Matt ($750,000 retained)
COL
  1. Anderson, Josh
  2. Calvert, Matt
  3. Carlsson, Gabriel
  4. 2020 1st round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Avs get an (A) shut down Dman prospect. Also receive a very skilled player (B, can shoot up all the way to an A-). And a 1st.

Calvert is cap dump. Because they get more than enough.

CBJ reject. Our future is already bright. Plus, we have cost controlled players and need no salary cap relief.

I wouldn't be very optimistic about the salary cap going up.

if they fire garth snow, i don't think they'd need to do that trade. I really think the thing that could stop them from signing tavares is snow.

I mean sure, but if you got offered those three players for that value... that seems like a no-brainer. That's like an automatic Stanley Cup.

You would probably have to sell off Atkinson, Jenner, Dubinsky, Foligno the next year but look at the Pens and their young depth. Just get players that play the game with speed and play it hard. Rust, Hagelin, Hornqvist (later two aren't young but still) are those type of players.

No it is not a no-brainer. Yeah, sure you get some really great players but you do it at the expense of a maybe even brighter future. It's not all about superstar players. The Jackets are showing that this year.

Agree with the fact that it's not 'all' about superstar players (in a way though it is). You get a franchise C. One that you don't have. And you get two of the best LW in the game. They are still young. Future would be brighter when you have a sure thing.
