Created by: DDoverChucky
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 28, 2021
Published: Dec. 28, 2021

Description
In order to take the next step the Wings need to get a good 2C behind Larkin. They trade for Hertl and sign him to an extension of about 7 million x 6 years. Hertl will create a second scoring line with Vrana, taking some pressure off the top line of Larkin.

Let me know what you think of the fit/price.

Definitely accept. But Hertl is going to get 7.5-8 easy.

Trading for Hertl would be beyond asinine asset management. Also, his contract will be more than that. Free agency or bust.

I think he’d be a great fit but don’t love the price. Detroit is projected 13th overall and I’d wager it drops in that 8-11 range. Most teams acquiring him would be playoff teams and they add a decent prospect to their first. So value wise I think it’s close but slight overpay and I really don’t want to move that first.

Hertl is not going to make it to UFA unless he is a rental to another team at the TDL.

I wouldn't trade the 22 or 23 1st for anyone other than McDavid.

I really like Hertl but signing him as a UFA was a big part of that.

Keeping your picks is great in theory, but if you can use them to add a core player you need why not do it.

There are many other teams that will want the player. If you can get him with an extension like Vegas did with Stone it's worth it.

Hertl is 28, I have no problem with using picks for players if they fit the age of the current core. People were recently talking about trading Larkin and Bertuzzi because of this and asset management is crucial in sustained success. Another factor is when do you think Hertl is going to regress? If you own his rights I’m sure his team is going to bat for an 8 year deal putting him around 36. Most likely you’ll see one of Hertl, Trocheck, or Copp testing the market.

Actually because he is a UFA you can trade for him for much cheaper than you normally would. When a strong center like this is available you have to get him. Betting on getting him in UFA is too risky.

Larkin and Bertuzzi will be free agents soon as well. If you don't improve the team and miss the playoffs again those guys could walk and you're setting yourself back another 2-3 years.

Maybe Bertuzzi walks but Larkin is a hometown captain with his family here. It’s not like Detroit is up against the cap so offering fair value isn’t a problem. Just a couple years ago Detroit finished with 39pts and have made significant progress under Yzerman with 2 guys competing for the Calder and Edvinsson looking solid. I don’t think it would be hard to sell Detroit as a having a good future to UFAs. Yzerman has repeatedly said patience which this goes against. Again, I’m not advocating against obtaining Hertl but rather exploring what may benefit Detroit from an asset management stand point.

Detroit is not in the position Vegas was. Getting reckless with picks is what poor GMs do. You draft and develop. If Hertl makes it to UFA, sure, take a shot, otherwise, stay the course, do not chase.

Not at all, because Yzerman is not betting on anything, he's following a smart, methodical process and asset management is part of that. If he's there as a UFA, you take a swing, otherwise, you stay the course.

Wrong. Larkin is staying and Bertuzzi is VERY likely traded before he ever makes it even close to UFA. I don't see him as a part of the long term picture anyways. If he is a part of the picture, he'll be extended far before it's even a risk - once again: asset management.

Ok but Detroit is more than likely one of the teams he'd be considering. He'd be on a line with Vrána and Zadina and there is also Hronek on the back end. Plus the last team Yzerman helped build is going for the three-peat.

Bertuzzi could be gone and honestly if it happens it will be out of the blue because Yzerman plays everything ridiculously close to the vest. Larkin isn't going anywhere with the addition of Raymond, Seider and Suter he is on pace for the best season of his career and he actually is smiling again in the post game interviews. If you really think Larkin is going leave Detroit that really does speak to your credibility.

Looking at this year's draft im fairly confident that Detroit are missing 2 pieces.
1. This year's first round draft pick.
2. Time to develop

If this team manages to get a Top 10 forward who can be a 1 or 2C - plenty of options this draft they then just need some time for their prospects to mature and supporting pieces to be acquired. Maybe the next year they are competing for a wild-card spot (22/23). The year after if the players continue their current trajectory the year after that they should be pushing for a divisional spot (23/24.)
