The Ullmark idea is interesting but I don't think the Bruins would look to retain. I'm curious as to if they would want Barrie+ in exchange for Linus?

Carolina won't surrender Bear for anything shy of death. Holland lost that trade the day he conceived of its idea.

Why would Bruins even trade Ullmark? Just signed him and seems to be doing decent there. Sure, Swayman is also doing well but he still has another year on ELC. That's two .920 goalies for 6M.

You think the bear trade is that bad? Bear is 6th in TOI for Carolina defensemen, almost 7th now, and only 6 points so far this season. He doesn't get big penalty kill minutes, nor does he never really ends up on their power play. It's pretty clear they don't see him as a top 4 guy. And I've watched a couple Carolina games, Bear seems to be playing pretty well, but he doesn't really look like he's made any huge improvements or anything. I like Bear, and he's definitely a fan favorite, but I'm not going to lose sleep over losing a 6th defenceman

Don't know that they'd trade him, but rumor is Rask could be ready to go in a few weeks. While Rask isn't under contract, his re-signing with Boston sounds more like a when than if. Obviously this gives Boston a logjam of games but being Swayman is waiver exempt, he probably goes to the AHL

Everything I've heard is that Bruins fans have been unhappy with Ullmark, at least to start the year. I don't know if that's still the truth, I simply find the idea interesting. I bore of seeing the same 6 trades over and over again and like new ideas.

Bear is currently 4th in 5v5 TOI for the Hurricanes and 5th in all situations. He's also played 7 fewer games than Slavin and Skjei and 5 less than Cole. Interestingly enough, Pesce is 6th and 6th using those same metrics. Does that qualify Pesce as a bottom pairing defender too?

Bear is a young, cost-controlled asset for the Hurricanes that plays genuinely good hockey. He's one of the last pieces they'd move and I'm absolutely certain that Tulsky has plans for Ethan to be the Hurricanes #2RD behind Pesce for years to come.

You should be looking at average TOI for dmen not total time on ice for all players... It's pretty clear Carolina isn't letting him play big minutes. Here's the stats dude https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/statistics

Slavin, Pesce, Skjei, and Cole all play way more time short handed.

Not saying he isn't a part of their future. But he isn't really helping with either special team, and he's 6th in average TOI for Carolina defenceman. Maybe in the future he'll get a bigger role, but he's undoubtably playing 6th defenceman minutes right now

Edit: hmmm that link didn't copy right, but just go to Carolina and select dmen

Natural stat trick is your friend brother! Super awesome database but I too did notice that Bear was 6th in aTOI. I find his higher usage at evens telling though: it suggests that he's being used as a second pairing name for the majority of the game state. I don't think there's a chance he'd find much for powerplay minutes behind Skjei and DeAngelo (maybe next season?) despite his cannon of a shot and there's probably room for PK time next year if Cole moves on too. The Canes just have a very, very strong blueline and breaking in as a top option will have to be earned.

Most Bruins fans love to **** on our goalies. Fans were trying to run Rask out of town for most of his career (along with Krejci). Every shortcoming Boston has had gets pinned on Rask. Ullmark wasnt great to start but he's been a lot better. Add to that Swayman being the shiney new toy that 90% of Bruins fans had no idea who he was until last year and Vladar doing well for CGY and here we are lol.

As a Bruins fan, I can honestly say most of our fanbase is insufferable.

As a Canes fan, let me chime in here.

Bear's missed a lot of games through COVID and just bugs this season. But when he's healthy, his partner has been Jaccob Slavin up on the first pairing. Bear kills penalties, but Carolina take SO F*CKING MANY that is numbers in comparison to Slavin or Pesce will seem slightly off. He plays more SHTOI/G than Cole, and mainly plays with Skjei. They're already talking about a new deal for Bear, so I highly doubt he's being moved anytime soon when he's been as good as he is.

You think they'll sign him to a long term deal this off-season? Something like the Pesce contract?

I'm a big fan of Ethan's and hope he gets every cent he wants for 8 years. If Carolina wins another cup and Bear gets to lift Lord Stanley it'll be a good day in the BeterChiarelli household.

Carolina won't surrender Bear for anything shy of death. Holland lost that trade the day he conceived of its idea.

Looks like they surrendered Bear for a 5th and retained on him, seems quite a bit shy of death

You must be some sort of weapons-grade bored to go around posting in threads a year or so old just to dunk on people. Congrats, I was wrong.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude or anything. I was just scrolling though my old comments and thought it was interesting that Bear ended up getting dumped for so little
