We have a billion left handed d prospects. A first and 3 probably gets the deal done. Id assume the pick is this year as the draft is Montreal and for Florida they're draft position is more certain this year

The 1st round pick is for 2023 and has no lottery protection like in the Sekera trade.

Florida traded away its 2022 1st to Buffalo.

It will need to be for 2023.

I just happened to hear what Pierre Lebrun had to say about Florida's interest in Chiarot.

Also, the fact that the draft is in Montreal should have absolutely no bearing on the value that Montreal gets from any trade.

how'd I forget they gave up the pick.
also I mentioned the draft being in Montreal because they might want the pick in 2022 so they could have multiple picks at home. Now they might target a 23 draft pick as next years draft looks insane, and odds are even later in the draft will be strong, who knows

They will want a 2022 1st rounder. What easier way to sell the fanbase on the new direction than some early nice high end prospects. The habs 2nd round pick will likely be around 35th so if you can acquire a 1st you can either potentially have 3 picks inn the first 40 OR use that 2nd round pick to push that 1st up higher in the first round.

I like and agree with getting a 23 1st, Florida is not guaranteed to make the playoffs next year so having 2 shots at Bedard and company would be worth it. We could always trade Toffoli or Drouin (retained) to get another 1st in 22 but I would rather have our pick this year and a couple of shots next year.

The one time they brought the draft to New Jersey, we had the #9 pick. Lou traded it one the floor.

What a way to kill the room.

Why is there any sort of interest in Chiarot? The guy isn't good at all. He's a bottom pair guy being forced into a top pairing role and hardly staying afloat. He's physical but doesn't help your team generate offense nor does he defend well. He's paid 3.5M and isn't worth anything near that. I wouldn't trade a 5th for him as you can probably find better and cheaper players on the waiver wire. Im baffled as to why the general consensus is that he is worth a 1st rounder

Try playing against him two nights in a row, or even every other night. There's a reason teams want physicality in the playoffs. It's an element that is a little overrated, but it exists because it's well known the whistles go away.

He might be physical but he also allows the other team to score a couple goals and doesn't help his team score anything. At the end of the day hockey is won by scoring goals and preventing goals against not by who can feed the opposition the most crosschecks to the spine

I don't get why the asking price for Chiarot just keeps going up. A 1st would be a highway robbery for the Habs

Also, the Sekera trade is not a good comparison, as he had just had a breakout season of 44 points in 74 games

You asked why there is interest in him. He's not a statistical darling.

1. It's not that the asking price for Chiarot just keeps going up.

Multiple teams are rumoured to be in on Chiarot.

For instance, Elliotte Friedman speculated a while ago that the Edmonton Oilers might pay a 1st for Chiarot.

https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2913073

And now, Pierre Lebrun has said that the Panthers really want Chiarot as well.

https://www.rds.ca/hockey/canadiens/canadiens-ben-chiarot-convoite-par-les-panthers-et-bien-d-autres-1.15259950

2. Before being traded, Sekera's point production plummeted to 19 points in 57 games.

A far cry from his breakout season the year before.

Also, point production is not the reason why teams will be offering a 1st for Chiarot.

David Savard is another example who had extremely poor point production with a team in the basement, but was still traded for a 1st.

Even though Sekera's point production dipped, he had more points in his last 57 games as a Cane than Chiarot has in the last 2 seasons combined.

David Savard didn't have a lot of points, but he did have great defensive underlying numbers. Chiarot, however, does not. Also, Nause (2nd round pick last draft) and a 1st is much more than what Savard was traded for.

A few teams being interested in Chiarot might drive his price to be the rumored 1st (which in itself is a massive overpay), but no team is spending a 1st and a 2nd
