The Connolly and Dadonov trades mean we're paying out $6.75M in cash next year for (essentially) two 3rds. How are you going to sell the Pegula's on that??

By telling them they are required to get to the cap floor somehow and this at least nets them some assets for money they have to spend. They aren't going to be handing out big deals to free agents and they are going to play mostly players on rookie deals, so they're saving money long-term by taking on bad contracts for a year but also not backing up the development of younger players by bringing in guys who would take playing time away. That money then comes off the books in 2023-24 when you can resign your young players with that money.

Essentially, how did Adams sell them on taking on Boychuk's contract when he is never going to play for them? Because they have to get to the floor and his money will be gone next year. Same concept but you at least get something of value for your investment.

Boychuk's contract is insured though, this isn't the same thing at all.

Remember, despite Boychuk being essentially retired due to an eye injury, he is still under contract for the 2021-22 season. He carries a $6MM cap hit, but the base salary is only $1.25MM. Even that amount is likely covered at least in part by insurance, meaning the Sabres won’t be paying out much (if any) actual salary in order to stay cap compliant. (CapFriendly shares the specific details, reporting that 60% of Boychuk’s salary is insured, meaning the Sabres are on the hook for less than $500K).

That move cost the Pegula's less than $500k. You're asking them to shell out $6.75M for players who aren't on the Sabres roster, not the same thing at all. If you could justify it by acquiring a couple of first round picks, it might pass. But two 3rds? Not a chance.

Fair point, and I did not know those were the circumstances around the deal so thank you for correcting me on that. I don't think they can get firsts out of it, but seconds probably aren't out of the question. I think Adams has done a good job on selling them what the direction could be, and they are in acquire asset mode while promoting playing time amongst the young guys. I just don't see how they're going to reach the cap floor without sacrificing one of those things. How would you think they do it?

Exactly like the Boychuk deal - take on cap that doesn't have dollars attached. And if a player does cost a significant amount of real dollars, Adams will make sure he gets compensated in high picks.

Who is out there like that? Seabrook is one guy that comes to mind, but other teams may not be as desperate to get rid of guys if their not in cap trouble and they'll just stay on LTIR.
