I'd take that deal tbh. Not sure why would Pittsburgh would do it though. Zucker is the better player and is worth the $1M extra over Hoffman.

There's an argument for both sides. Hoffman is IMO a one-dimensional player who needs to play with higher end talent to score. He'd in essence be Kessel 2.0 for the Pens.

Despite the scoring issues, Zucker has been playing great hockey on both ends of the ice.

Personally, I think Hoffman is a risk and the Pens are close to ridding themselves of Zucker's contract, so I wouldn't make that trade, but I also wouldn't be mad at the trade. At least not right off.

I honestly don't know much about Norlinder to make a proper assessment, but everything I know seems to point out they're probably similar. Norlinder might have a little more upside offensively, but trade-wise it's probably a lateral move.

The Pens' defensive situation will be something to watch out for. I can see them trying to move Matheson this off-season if they can and if they're back is up against the wall financially, Pettersson could get moved for futures + maybe a roster player.

If nothing changes, there's going to be no room on the left side and young dmen like POJ who is IMO NHL-ready may request a trade out and the Pens will have to re-sign Riikola or someone similar for depth.

Of course, but that's a tough task. Moving Pettersson would be very bad, but the Pens may have no choice.

Norlinder is clearly a boom or bust while POJ have more chance to be a regular in the NHL. Norlinder comparable is clearly Krug, great offensively not good defensively. Everything will depends if he can put a lot of points, if he doesn’t, he’ll be a Victor Mete (but worse defensively but still could run a PP)

Imo I think Matheson has positive value. Rutherford gave up assets for him and he turned put to e a great player for us. Do you think anyone would be willing to give up positive value?

And Pettersson is still young and is having a bounce back year. We should keep that top 4 for a little bit. I would say at least another year or 2

POJ is NHL-ready, but I don't know what his ceiling is. I called it lateral move because of potential for either player.

I mean look, you can never discount any GM to make bad decisions. I don't think Matheson is bad by any stretch and I've been very happy with his play, but he will never live up to that contract and for that he'll always have negative value IMO.

Worst move of JR's tenure.

The only hope for moving Matheson is moving him to a team with a player in a similar situation. I've attempted Matheson for Colin White a few times. OTT fans always reject it, but I think that's a viable option if it's even on Hextall's radar. White isn't a good contract, but not knowing what Carter's future is, I'd rather the Pens overspend on a 3C than a 3rd pairing LHD. The only argument for OTT is that they're not trying to compete just yet, so they don't need to make any moves like that. Their arguments for the dmen coming up are very weak.

Yeah. I was thinking maybe a Hagelin, Matheson swap. WSH is obviously contending and there fans really dont like Hagelin.

I can see why they wouldn’t make the move but I agree their argument is weak. They haven’t even signed Sanderson yet and I’d assume he gets a 3 year ELC come offseason. Which means Matheson would only have 1 year left when Sanderson is due a new contract. And it doesn’t seem like Brannstrom is working out and they just sent delzaster down to the minors. They are weak on the left side. They could also then use Brannstrom to take advantage of Vegas by trading Brannstrom for Martinez and a pick so vegas can become cap compliant when Eichel is added or get another one of their bigger contracts with a pick for Brannstrom. I did an acgm that I didn’t share just to see what their cap situation would look like with a White for Matheson and 4th trade and Brannstrom for Martinez and a 1st trade would look like and they still had over 11 million in cap space. And had tons of cap space for future years too. By the time Sanderson comes up, Martinez is either gone or an easy trade and by the time his contract comes up (assuming he gets a chabot like contract) Matheson is an easy trade with just 1 year on his contract.

It just seems like perfect bad contract for bad contract move. The Pens are better overspending at forward than defense and to be honest, what White would likely bring at 3C he wouldn't be a huge overpay, but his contract just doesn't make sense for OTT right now IMO.

Agreed they have more than enough nhl ready forwards and not enough nhl ready defensemen.
Even if they don’t put Stutzle at center they still have Norris, Pinto, Gambrell, Bishop, Gaudette who can play center and have tons of cap space to re-sign Tierney or even upgrade at 3C. Left wing they have Tkachuk, Stutzle, Formenton. Paul could be an easy re-sign. At RW they have Batherson, Brown, Watson and can move one of Gambrell/Gaudette to 4th line RW and that be a pretty decent forward core. But at left d, Mete is their 2nd best LD since it doesn’t seem like Brannstrom is a fit. Matheson would be an upgrade and instantly slide into that 2LD spot. And honestly Matheson could be the type of defenseman that Ottawa could use. Might not be the greatest defensively by is good at the breakout and offensively. Takes some of the load off of Chabot 🤷‍♂️
