Murray for Mrazek

Created by: tmlfan93
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 4, 2022
Published: Jan. 4, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I believe this trade could work for Ottawa and Toronto. Ottawa gets out from a bad contact, and gets a chance at a goalie when healthy usually plays well enough to be a #1. Toronto gets the cap relief from unloading Mrazek, and gets a goalie in Murray who has connections to Dubas. Might be a gamble for the Leafs, but Murray as a back up at 1.5m isn't bad.

If Ottawa is willing to take Ritchie...maybe we can throw them a pick and a prospect for their troubles.

I don't think OTT wants to pay $3M of Murray's contract for the next three years for nothing. Buying him out is way cheaper.

Why wouldn't Ottawa just buy him out?

It says "Ottawa pays for the additional picks" , but I don't see any picks going to OTT. So I guess maybe they'd do it if there were a couple 1sts going to OTT for eating ~$8m in cap and ~$9m in salary.

Ottawa is better off with Murray. They've got awhile before they're actually going to be competitive, might as well pick high.

In no world does it make sense for Ottawa to eat 3m/year off Murray AND take on 3.8m/year in Mrazek.

This has exactly 0% chance of happening.

And no way Mrazek waives his NTC to go to OTT.

As some already hinted, Ottawa will buy out Murray, it's pretty much written in the sky

My guess is Murray signs a 1 M$ reclamation contract next summer on a team with a solid goalie and proper NHL defense/structure and he does well with them (if not diminished by injuries of course)

He has a pretty long injury history already though so it's also possible that his body doesn't allow him to perform at a high level anymore.

Matt Murray is a symptom of what is the result of HORRIBLE management

Dorion is actually smarter than I thought as he perfectly deflected blame from him with this Murray situation. people are gullible and falling for it

Ottawa has some pretty good young players (Chabot, Batherson, Norris, Tkachuk, Stutzle, Zub, Formenton) but literally nothing behind them outside of Connor Brown who is the ONLY quality veteran support. This is actually a crime against them. Nobody has thrown young players to the wolves like that since the Oilers did 15 years ago.

Bring in a real NHL GM and I'm convinced he'd make that team really competitive in a short period of time. Coaching, veteran support and depth are needed. That being said, it might take new ownership to have a future again so we're still waiting for that.
