Beaulieu and Poolman were not a great fit together in the limited time (11 games) they played together last year. In terms of 5v5 stats, CF% 46.15; xGF% 28.74. I guess it is to be expected with Poolman a being 3rd pairing guy and Beaulieu being below replacement level.

Is Beaulieu really that far below replacement level? What if they just play third pairing minutes together? Maybe they got overused/overburdened from the Jet's lack of defensive depth from season's past

Last year they only played parts of 11 games together and that was as the third pairing. In their limited time as a third pairing they weren't very good and you definitely don't want to play them any higher in the lineup as a pairing (which you aren't planning to). Its not all their fault, as the forwards were pretty much defense-optional most of the year.

When they played higher in the lineup (due to team injuries), they were individually caved in with whoever they played with.

If you are grabbing Beaulieu as a 7D for depth and injury cover then that should be fine, if you plan on playing him regularly as a 3rd pairing defenseman you won't get good results.
