Halak is a top end back-up but doesn't fetch a 1st. Could see maybe a 2nd though, would have to think Fleury is still Plan A.

True and he's on a good contract. Probably nets a 2nd or 3rd round pick, but Vancouver is also taking on Koskinen and his contract. Edmonton needs to add significantly for that and pay a premium for intra-division trade

He's on track to trigger his bonuses (10GP and 0.905sv%) which puts his salary at $3mil. Salary difference is $1.5mil pro-rated to roughly half the year... ~$750k. It's definitely worth something for the Oilers to save cap and get the better back-up but don't think it's into 1st territory. The intra-division trade thing is more impactful... given the changes in trajectories, Vancouver is back into the fight for the last playoff spot that could come at the expense of Edmonton. You likely don't throw a lifeline to a team you can potentially pass unless the return is an overpay... Halak isn't a starter at this stage in his career so Edmonton is unlikely to spend a 1st on a rental back-up that doesn't really solve their issue.
