What is the actual market for Chiarot

Created by: Shanesaw9
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 5, 2022
Published: Jan. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I've seen rumors involving Edmonton, St. Louis, Calgary, Florida, Toronto, etc. The latest one is STL, but I just don't see how Chiarot is a fit there unless they move Scandella out... so I'm wondering, what teams are actually a fit?

MTL would be willing to retain 50% and are looking for at least a 1st round pick in return... who are the actual potential suitors that would be willing to pay this price?

A team I haven't seen rumored yet but seems like a potential fit for me: The Rangers

Maybe?

They will get a first. He’s everything GM’s and coaches value. Plus he has a lot of playoff experience.

If the oilers are probably going to be in a playoff spot, they would be a good fit. Florida will for sure kick tires on Chiarot, it's a perfect marriage. Florida's best LD is guy forsling. Toronto could but they won't go up to a 1st and a prospect. Could see Minnesota interested also. Bet on Florida to acquire him.

Florida makes a lot of sense, I just wasn't sure about them because Forsling and even that Carlsson seem to be doing really well this year, however maybe that has more to do with them being well insulated in Florida than anything else.

TB paid a 1st and 3dd for Savard last year, I could see Florida wanting to make a similar move with Chiarot for playoffs... makes sense to me I wonder how Florida fans feel about it.

I think any team in a wild card spot currently or one that is within 5 points of a WC spot would be interested as well as any of the 3rd place teams in the divisions since they will want to improve their chances of solidifying a playoff berth. The question is who is willing to gamble and has a need for a 3-5 D man. My list is the obvious ones mentioned above and teams like maybe LA, Pitts, Philly, Van, Col, Detroit and NYR. TBH I think we should target teams like these for anyone who would return a 1st since only 3 or 4 of these teams will make the playoffs. That way we still have a shot at one of their picks winning the lotto and picking in the 2-10 range again. Example we trade Chiarot to Edmonton for their 1st this year and somehow they finish 16th but win either lotto then their pick becomes the 6th OVA an Habs is already at worst 3rd since Edmonton won a lotto.

I might be misunderstanding you but, This year only teams can move up 10 spots in the lottery

Right and since in my scenario Edmonton finishes 16th they win either lotto and their pick becomes the 6th and ours is the 3rd

Thing. Is Forsling is kind of a 3rd pairing dman, and carlsson is like a depth/scratch player. Which means they have a void on the left side and chiariot can fix that. The lines would be:

Weegar-Ekblad
Chiarot-Montour
Forsling-Gudas

Scratched would be juolevi,Carlsson

You can't get moved up in the draft unless you win 2nd or 3rd. So Edmonton can't go up from 16th to 6th

No you can't move up unless you win 1st or 2nd, 3rd is not part of the lotto this year. Since I said that Edmonton wins one lotto and we are currently 2nd last in the league the worst Montreal can draft is 3rd (assuming they don't win the other lotto)

How could edmonton win the lottery if they are 16th?

Only the top 11 teams can move up to 1st but the other teams can still move up 10 spots if they win

The market is probably bigger than people think. Even if a team is happy with their current personnel, they might prefer to bring a different element to the playoffs and have an eye on injuries/covid.

Can't think of a team needing that desperately a bottom-4 D-man but knowing the GMs of this league it's likely someone will overpay for the guy. Especially since the D-market has been crazy this year.

Spending a first on Chiarot is a big mistake, he's not even close to worth it. But some dumb GM is going to do it, most likely in order to copy Tampa's recipe for success.

My guess? Probably Capitals.

Two reasons why I don't think FLA will do it

a) they don't have a first this year, they spent it on Reinhart.
b) Zito would look so dumb if he paid the same amount for Chiarot as he did for Reinhart.

I don’t think we have discussed chiarot enough as a trade deadline target. We need to discuss this more.
