I have a feeling there will be some passionate fans from both sides in the comments… Hear out my thought process before you roast me.

The retool around Kane & Toews hasn’t worked for Chicago. They have some good young pieces that they can start rebuilding around. Kane has the chance to be an extremely valuable asset, especially if they trade him before he’s a 1-year rental. Chicago can build their future core around the #2 & #3 picks in the 2020 draft. The hawks will need to retain salary to make the deal work.

The Rangers are one of the only teams, if not the only team, that I think could make this work. IF the Rangers wanted to go all-in for the next 2 years, they can afford to part with a Kakko because of the other impact forwards they have locked up (Panarin, Kreider, Lafrenierre, Zibanejad, etc.). Kane has the New York connection being from Buffalo, he’s not foreign to playing in a big market, and re-uniting Kane & Panarin would be special. The money is going to get pretty tight in 2022-23, but that will be the last year of Kane’s deal.

This would definitely be a gamble for the Rangers. They get the better player today, no question, and I think this would make them a top 3 or 4 contending team. But if they don’t win a cup and Kakko goes on to have a solid career then it’s a tough look for NYR.

Rangers just can't afford Kane. Zibs and Fox alone get a 13m pay increase next season. Can the Hawks find a suitable team that can take on Kane's cap, and that Kane would waive to? Maybe LA.

Hawks would probably target a different package from the rangers. Kakko is a boom or BUST player/prospect at this point and I don't think they want to take the risk on him with the prospect cupboard so bare.

100% a win-now move. The Rangers still have several exciting your pieces (Lafrenierre, Chytil, Fox, Miller). But Kakko is a big part of their future as it stands now.

I still don’t come away impressed whenever is see Kakko play I get he’s decent defensively but that’s not what he was drafted to be

I definitely think he’ll improve it over time but for now he still hasn’t wowed me much

Chytil is not an exciting piece, hes a piece that needs to go.

I think you will get some resistance from CHI on this trade.

There would need to be more particularly if you want him before TDL. He is the only guy who can create offence on this team and to lose him without a first round this year is far too great a risk. If they decide to tank next year you could see a move like that in the offseason around the draft but a straight swap of Kakko for Kane retained isn't going to appease the CHI management.
