Description
I honestly believe wholeheartedly that this team should be a contender and they will pull it together soon. However, when they do pull it together, they, like every other team, will still have issues to fix. These issues are a top 6 rw to play with Connor and dubios (more a short term need), and a big top 4 rd (long term need). Right now, I do not want to look for a top 6 winger because I would like to see what harkins/svechnikov can do in that spot first and then make a decision. However, today I present a possible option for a longer term big, top 4 rd. Also, he happens to be a Manitoba boy :).

The guy I’m talking about is Damon Severson. Perfect fit for the jets. He has a big shot from the point to qb PP1, is big and physical, and is signed to a reasonable contract. Additionally, he’s a Manitoba guy so he might be more inclined to stay long term. Considering the term on his contract, he also will not be very costly to get. The package I made here is Vesalainen, gawanke, and a 1st. The 1st is a no brainer. Now, Vesalainen has top 6 potential, but he hasn’t been able to capitalize on the chances given to him in Winnipeg. Maybe a move can give him some much needed confidence that puts him on a Roslovic like trajectory. Gawanke is a decent b level prospect who should add some prospect depth the the devils left side. He has no chance of playing for the jets any time soon so it’s better to move him since he’s close to ready. I based this trade off of the savard and muzzin trades. Both top 4 d moved at the tdl for similar prices. However, if NJ thinks this isn’t enough, I would be willing to sweeten the pot by adding a guy like Nathan smith.

Just add beau lol, he’s a dump at this point and not worth a 3rd.

As for OP I really like this trade for NJ and WPG. I feel like Vesalainen really could break out with the right line mates and opportunities and I think that could happen in NJ. Gawanke is a really solid dman at the AHL level, been very surprised with him. Plus the 1st is definitely required for Severson.

I do think severson might cost a bit more than this though. Just a slight adjustment to the deal. Maybe the 3rd is conditional with a chance to be a 2nd if severson puts up a certain amount of points.

I would love it. But if we’re getting him at 25% retained salary, it has to be a stronger package going back (I’d imagine)

First, I really hope NJD re-signs Severson.

But f we do trade him, Jets could make sense.
I like Nathan Smith a lot, but there could be signability concerns as he could be free agent this summer.
I expected more goals from Vesalainen (what's the deal there?).
Lastly, since we'd be losing Subban to free agency and Severson to trade...we'd probably asking for RD back.

That's a decent amount to give up for a little over a year of Severson, but not outlandish or anything. I think it could work, especially if the Jets think they can re-up him.

Gwanke is a RD prospect who has played VG for the Moose...

It’s only 50% and nj isn’t the one retaining

I think smith would sign with New Jersey. Tbh, there’s no indication that he wouldn’t sign in Winnipeg so NJ makes sense.
Vesalainen is struggling with confidence. He’s a goal scorer who isn’t shooting. He’s still a big, strong power forward but he needs to shoot. It’s all confidence. He has a high end shot that will get him goals. Gawanke is a RD btw

Take Schmidt
Vesalainen+Schmidt+2nd+Beaulieu
Clears cap for Winnipeg and keeps Schmidt from blocking our youth and we can hopefully re-up Severson
