If he wants too much

Description
***Rats I just noticed an article about this on The Athletic.

***Doesn't talk about trading Mikheyev so I will continue. :)

Leafs don't have very much cap space next year and last time Mikheyev scored a few goals his agent tweeted "Show me the MONEY!!!" Pathetic.

Mikheyev has only played a few games over the last few years and has been either hot or cold. Has he proven himself to be worth more than a $1.75 MIL player?

While he's HOT should we trade him rather than lose him for nothing. Would you do it?

Worst case scenario is the Leafs put Kane on waivers and absorb the paltry $600,000 cap hit while he sits at home.

The thing with Marleau is that the retention was for less term -- he only had 1 year left on his deal. The second team's retention on Evander's going to cost at least a 1st, probably more.

the thing about marleau is that he had a full NTC/NCM and would only accept a trade to the sharks or to a team who would buy him out so he could sign with the sharks and since san jose said no the leafs didnt have any options but to drastically over pay.

There is no logic for a contending team to trade players just because they are upcoming UFAs. Maybe the Leafs should trade Campbell for futures are just give up on the season.
Gotta think 1.75m X 3.5 years of Kane costs more than a second. It's probably a good thought on the trade if you think the Leafs desire Kane. I just can't imagine any team that wants him.
Heck he'll likely be a UFA in the summer, let's see if there are any takers and at what cost.

I guess the logic I was thinking was if Dubas knows he can't re-sign Mikheyev but with the skill he flashes could get a player with warts signed for a few seasons that is also fast with soft hands you could give it a chance. Especially when a $1.75 MIL contract can be buried each year for only $0.6 MIL if it goes bad BUT could produce a 30-40 goal player if it works out. It's a gamble. I realize that but I think the risk is low.

Yep. I figure 5m costs a first. Cap space is a sellers market. I think at this point, every dollar the Sabres spend is coming out of the owners personal funds, and they are sick of paying for guys to not work for them, for an organization that has lowered the bar for being inept. If they agree to take on cap space, something nice is coming back.

I was thinking along the lines of JoL. Marleau's $6.25 MIL contract was iron clad against Dubas and it cost Dubas a 1st round pick because of it.

This retention would be $1.75 MIL of cap dead space and real money but 2nd picks are valuable and for a rebuilding team with tons of cap space it is an easy way to get a high draft pick without giving up player assets.

You know who his agent is eh? Dan Milstein will be showing absolutely no loyalty to the Leafs and focussed only on the highest bidder. I don't think the Leafs have a chance to sign Mikheyev no matter what. 3 goals or 30 goals. He's gone. If you can get a comparable asset then why not try. This asset has some warts but maybe MLSE can help him.

kanes going to cost more than that to get that retention. seems like it's best just to keep mikheyev and let him walk if a contract can't be worked out.

Yeah…. A return here for Kane would NEVER happen
You’d have to pick another team
