Colorado passes, I'm quite happy with Girard and Newhook, and Compher we can dump elsewhere.

Congrats on ruining the top 6 completely and guaranteeing that Matthews will walk to free agency. If that was your goal, you've succeeded!

You realize the salary cap exists for other teams right?

    Quoting: MadLin27
Yeah. Colorado can make this move easily (from a cap perspective)

You know after this season Kadri, Burakovsky, and Nichushkin are UFAs, MacKinnon and Byram expire after next season, and they need to sign a goalie for next season right? Adding Marner significantly decreases their chances to do any of these. Avs decline for that reason

    Quoting: UpsideDownQue
If this trade happened then the only guys the Avs would have under contract for 23-24 is Landeskog, Rantanen, Marner, O'Connor, Toews, and Makar - with about 42M in space for everyone else (assuming cap of 83.5M by then). Its definitely possible, but they would have to choose between MacKinnon and depth. With Mack at 12M and Byram at 6M that leaves them with 24M in space and 8 guys under contract, which isnt ideal but it is doable

I agree with you 100%. Im just saying purely theoretically they could do it but would have to sacrifice pretty much all of their depth

    Quoting: justaBoss
Well the return for Marner is relatively meh. Nor could COL afford if we take into consideration the contracts they need to re-sign in the near future (MacKinnon, Burakovsky, Kadri, a goalie). Avs just don't need Marner to the point they'd pay $11M for him annually, they're already the top team offensively. Plus the likes of Girard, while good, are simply not a need for the Leafs. They need more defensive assets to their blueline.

Buying out Ritchie would come cheaper for TOR than retaining him.

Overall imo the team is weaker than it currently is.

marner is just too expensive, avs cant build out the rest of the team. besides they need that cap for campbell.

Seems like Colorado is getting the short end of the stick here.

Colorado is easily getting the better players here (unless Newhook becomes a top line player) but obviously it makes things a lot harder for them salary wise. At the end of the day, both teams say no. To me, the best places to potentially send (emphasis on potentially as there about a 98% chance he's no going anywhere) Marner are Nashville, Anaheim, NJ, Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit or Arizona.

Girard’s contract has more value than Marners

First off, that's not what I said, I said the avs were getting the better players.

Second off all, I dont agree. Marner has been a far better player over his career, and no, it is not debatable. And I think (though this one is more debatable) that hes better enough that hès worth more in a trade.

These isn’t 2002. A players value is a function of their performance and contract. Girards value is higher.

Exactly! Like when they let Hyman walk and that ruined the top 6 or when Marner missed time this year and they still won and Matthews continued to score goals.

Thats a fair comment. But I think if you're high on getting Marner, Burakovsky becomes expendable. Same with Nichushkin.
Colorado could do some salary gymnastics and make it work.

Generally speaking I would like to pay my 2nd line wingers less than 1st line wingers. Probably becomes more important when that 1st line guy makes 9.5 mil. The Avs don't want to become TML.2. You and MTL can keep your cap train wrecks. Great players but this is a team sport. Lots of good players is better than 3 or 4 as you all are finding out and trying to trade out your 7 figure contracts. Avs may look at a 1-1 for Nylander

& they replaced Hyman with a very similar player at 1/5 of the cost with Bunting. & you think replacing Marner with JT Compher (who can barely crack the top 9 in Colorado) keeps this offence a top 10? Wow.

Not saying you're wrong on the first part here. But you're far outweighing the contract here. Marner's a point per game player over his career and over the last few seasons he's been over that. His career performance has been far better than Girard's, and enough so that the contract doesn't even it out.

Hate on Marner all you want, but if you deny his stats and play and try to only argue that his contract makes more of his value then you're not looking at him rationally at all.

I think Matthews can be a dominant forward with Kerfoot and Bunting. I think Nylander can be dominant with Kerfoot and whoever was the other winger last season in the playoffs. JT has made a career out of making poor linemates look good in NY. Personally I think this trade is trash for TO but this is the usual argument. Marner, Matthews, Nylander and JT are all overrated players who succeed because they play with each other somehow they only get points because of the other ones but they only get points because of the other ones. It's silly.

Let’s say marner is adequately paid for his services. Girard is underpaid on a long term deal pretty significantly, and he plays a more important position. I’ll take a good #2 on that deal all day long over an $11M winger that isn’t exactly dominant.

To be clear. This trade is not indictative of "hating on Marner". I love Marner. Not hating on Marner at all. Amazing player.
This trade for Toronto would be to retain Campbell and still have some depth.
I strongly disagree with you about Leafs dropping to 15-20 without Marner. That is INSANE.

They have the best goal scorer in the world + Nylander and Tavares who are both consistently top 40 in the NHL in scoring. That alone is better more than half of NHL teams and I would argue still top 10.
