You know after this season Kadri, Burakovsky, and Nichushkin are UFAs, MacKinnon and Byram expire after next season, and they need to sign a goalie for next season right? Adding Marner significantly decreases their chances to do any of these. Avs decline for that reason

If this trade happened then the only guys the Avs would have under contract for 23-24 is Landeskog, Rantanen, Marner, O'Connor, Toews, and Makar - with about 42M in space for everyone else (assuming cap of 83.5M by then). Its definitely possible, but they would have to choose between MacKinnon and depth. With Mack at 12M and Byram at 6M that leaves them with 24M in space and 8 guys under contract, which isnt ideal but it is doable

Well the return for Marner is relatively meh. Nor could COL afford if we take into consideration the contracts they need to re-sign in the near future (MacKinnon, Burakovsky, Kadri, a goalie). Avs just don't need Marner to the point they'd pay $11M for him annually, they're already the top team offensively. Plus the likes of Girard, while good, are simply not a need for the Leafs. They need more defensive assets to their blueline.

Buying out Ritchie would come cheaper for TOR than retaining him.

Overall imo the team is weaker than it currently is.

Colorado is easily getting the better players here (unless Newhook becomes a top line player) but obviously it makes things a lot harder for them salary wise. At the end of the day, both teams say no. To me, the best places to potentially send (emphasis on potentially as there about a 98% chance he's no going anywhere) Marner are Nashville, Anaheim, NJ, Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit or Arizona.

Thats a fair comment. But I think if you're high on getting Marner, Burakovsky becomes expendable. Same with Nichushkin.

These isn’t 2002. A players value is a function of their performance and contract. Girards value is higher.

& they replaced Hyman with a very similar player at 1/5 of the cost with Bunting. & you think replacing Marner with JT Compher (who can barely crack the top 9 in Colorado) keeps this offence a top 10? Wow.

Not saying you're wrong on the first part here. But you're far outweighing the contract here. Marner's a point per game player over his career and over the last few seasons he's been over that. His career performance has been far better than Girard's, and enough so that the contract doesn't even it out.
