You realize the salary cap exists for other teams right?

Yeah. Colorado can make this move easily (from a cap perspective)

Congrats on ruining the top 6 completely and guaranteeing that Matthews will walk to free agency. If that was your goal, you've succeeded!

Not going to comment on trade value, just that I don't think the Leafs (of all teams) go to the regular season with over 9 million in net (lol).

You know after this season Kadri, Burakovsky, and Nichushkin are UFAs, MacKinnon and Byram expire after next season, and they need to sign a goalie for next season right? Adding Marner significantly decreases their chances to do any of these. Avs decline for that reason

Ruining the top 6 completely? You're crazy. Still a top 10 offense.
Matthews and Marner aren't that close. Marner getting traded has zero impact on Matthews staying. If anything it frees up $ to sign him.

Avs definitely arent doing that. Marner eats up way too much of the cap and they would have to sacrifice too much depth to do this

no they cant, and this is an easy decline by the Avs, it makes 0 sense for them

Thats a fair comment. But I think if you're high on getting Marner, Burakovsky becomes expendable. Same with Nichushkin.
Colorado could do some salary gymnastics and make it work.

Its fair to decline the trade.
They could do it though, yes.
You let Burkovsky and Nichushkin walk and you're good.

Top 10?! Lmao. That's maybe a 15-20 ranked offence that's HIGHLY carried by 3 players. Anyone of Matthews, Nylander, or Tavares gets hurt and you're in the bottom 10 of offence. There's not much dynamic there at all. You have 1 good line and a mediocre line. & the depth isn't there at all with 2 unproven young players and veterans that aren't up to speed with the lineup.

Matthews and Marner are pretty close actually. They frequently hang out together and Matthews isn't gonna wanna play on a roster that can't compliment him and Marner does that perfectly.

You've literally ruined the present and future of this team like this. It's just not smart.

Technically they can, but they would have to sacrifice all of their depth to do it which makes it an easy no

No they aren’t good, honestly you don’t really have an understand of the avs cap situation and roster

It’s a bad trade for the avs. They aren’t taking on that much cap, it hurts their roster depth and makes extending mackinnon almost impossible

You should reevaluate... lol. Losing Marner doesn't ruin the offense..
If not, agree to disagree and we can see what other people think.
They don't hang out all the time. They are fine, but they aren't besties.

Matthews was literally dominant last night without Marner. He actually looked better being the primary puck carrier.

I like Marner, but boy you are being dramatic. ITs just an ACGM

    This is fair.
I find it funny that people are saying "They can't"...
They absolutely can, its just a matter of priorities. If its not worth it for COL, thats fine, but if they wanted to they absolutely could.. as you said

They'd have to pick between MacKinnon and depth, they wouldnt lose both just because of Marner. I agree with you that this is a bad trade for the Avs and it makes their cap situation much worse but its not like the 6M difference between Girard and Marner would make it impossible to keep MacKinnon and impossible to keep their depth

I’d they did this trade they would have roughly 20m in cap space to sign mackinnon and byram with approx 11 guys under contract,

I don’t see how you take care of mack and byram without trading major talent to fill out the Roster

No need for marner and his 11m contract as the 2nd best RW on the roster

marner is just too expensive, avs cant build out the rest of the team. besides they need that cap for campbell.

If this trade happened then the only guys the Avs would have under contract for 23-24 is Landeskog, Rantanen, Marner, O'Connor, Toews, and Makar - with about 42M in space for everyone else (assuming cap of 83.5M by then). Its definitely possible, but they would have to choose between MacKinnon and depth. With Mack at 12M and Byram at 6M that leaves them with 24M in space and 8 guys under contract, which isnt ideal but it is doable

I agree with you 100%. Im just saying purely theoretically they could do it but would have to sacrifice pretty much all of their depth

Well the return for Marner is relatively meh. Nor could COL afford if we take into consideration the contracts they need to re-sign in the near future (MacKinnon, Burakovsky, Kadri, a goalie). Avs just don't need Marner to the point they'd pay $11M for him annually, they're already the top team offensively. Plus the likes of Girard, while good, are simply not a need for the Leafs. They need more defensive assets to their blueline.

Buying out Ritchie would come cheaper for TOR than retaining him.

Overall imo the team is weaker than it currently is.
