Leafs Next Year

Created by: KMarner10
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 10, 2022
Published: Jan. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These are just potential options looking internally for the most part. The defence core is the same because Holl is affordable and I think he will turn it around. Most of the forwards are defensively responsible and all lines are scoring threats.

I wanted to include Evander Kane but with everything that's going on with him right now I just made the team without him. He could obviously be signed instead of Turris (really a placeholder) and played instead of Simmonds or Aston-Reese.

Why would Arizona do this? Not a chance.

Robertson's not ready for NHL minutes let alone top line duties.

Kerfoot has more value than that, no point in dumping him for nothing that helps the team.

Mikheyev likely won't be back because he wants a higher role and Toronto doesn't have the room for that.

Turris is barely an option for the Oilers who lack depth every year, how is he good enough to crack Toronto much more deep lineup?

There's also no chance they go into next season with the same defence core if they don't go deep this season. That'll be the prime area of upgrade in the off-season.

More picks can be added, they were just an example.

Upgrade the defence core how? With what money? They'd have to move somebody like Brodie or Muzzin out to make money work so in order to improve you would need either 1 player or a combination of players who make the same money as Muzzin/Brodie that is better than just keeping Muzzin/Brodie. Might be impossible to do

Crazy how only trading Ritchie, Mrazek, and Kerfoot, signing Jack to a reasonable deal, signing one UFA for 1.5 mill, and another for 2.5 mill uses all of Toronto's available cap space

Not sure there is anything else they can do

Move money around from up front. Mikheyev liking not re-signing and moving Holl creates $4.5M in cap space which is definitely enough for an upgrade for them

Technically Evander Kane is available for a relatively cheap price, I just wonder what his market would look like. Hopefully Keefe makes Cobra feel like he's getting opportunities and he stays because that 3rd line would be lethal. Even if Robertson is more of a 4th line/13th fwd, Engvall is capable, Mikheyev can play top 6 minutes with Bunting going to the top line. Aston-Reese can hold his own in the bottom 6 and would be a solid option.

However, we just need to guarantee Campbell, Kase, Liljegrin and Sandin stays and we fill the rest of the holes.

Okay fair yes im sure they could find an upgrade on Holl for 4.5 mill. Only thing is that comes at the expense of a third line LW so that forces them to sign a guy like Turris or Ashton-Reese on a near league minimum deal to play third/fourth line minutes.

With such a tight cap situation spending more money to upgrade one spot makes a big hole in another spot

Canes don't need or want Kerfoot. Sure it's an "any team" trade but send him elsewhere, please.

Really? Niederreiter and Trocheck are both UFAs, and sure Necas is going to step in, but if either Nino or Trocheck walks, you guys would be in need of a top 6 fwd. Kerfoot is very good defensively and very underrated offensively, so he would fit on your team pretty well.

Assuming they let Trocheck walk -
    Teravainen - Aho - Jarvis
    Svechnikov - Kotkaniemi - Necas
    Niederreither- Staal - Fast
    Lorentz - Drury - Martinook

    Assuming it's Nino that goes
    Svechnikov - Trocheck - Jarvis
    Teravainen - Aho - Necas
    Lorentz - Staal - Fast
    Drury - Kotkaniemi - Martinook

    Assuming they let both go
    Svechnikov - Aho - Jarvis
    Teravainen - Kotkanieimi - Necas
    Lorentz - Staal - Fast
    Martinook - Drury - Bokk

They're good without Kerfoot. Not that Kerfoot is bad, but he's ideally a 3rd liner on a true contender anyway, in whatever position you play him in.

Sandin, Liljegren and Kase are RFA'S so unless teams are willing to give up draft picks their not going nowhere.

And people think their trading for Chychrun. They are in deep water next year because Dubas gave out all these NTC or NMC to the d-men. They might have no option but to move Nylander or Marner to ice a contending type team.
