Habs will want a first for Chiarot, but Oilers get to keep Samorukov.

It seems to me that Russell has unwritten trade protection. Ken Holland and Dave Tippett are very loyal to their veterans.

Samorukov will get traded to someone they cant keep all the defensemen that are waiver ineligible next year.

They might waive him then to go on the taxi squad. I doubt they waive benson.

Well according to ol' Kenny, the 1st isn't for sale. Can't go for it every year I guess.

The fact that he said that made me throw up this trade.

Definitely risk in waiving Benson, not so much in waiving Russell.

I can't blame the Oilers for not wanting to trade a 1st for a guy like Chiarot, who is a good player that could help them but is also not elite. But I don't think the rebuilding Habs with a new GM could accept less than a first for their most valuable trade chip.

I believe Holland isn't BSing when he says he won't trade the first and I believe montreal needs the first because it is political and the draft is in Montreal.

Very likely holland trades 2 second rounders as opposed to a first for a non montreal Dan. that is his signature move.

I wouldn't waste a 1st on a rental. NHL Discussion on instagram had a post recently of rentals at the deadline. I think it was at about 20% success rate of the trade working out in favour. Unless its Chychrun or another player with term, not sure trading a 1st is ever worth it.

We're not at Tampa level yet.

I also don't believe they should be trading a 1st for a rental, except MAYBE Fleury, depending on what their roster and standing looks like in a few weeks. But to say that it's not for sale when we already stated you are all in and the moves you made in the summer confirmed that? It's brutal. They could have added last TDL but stated "it wasn't the year to go all in". When is it time to go all in? When 97 and 29 are 24 months from walking? I think thats what frustrates fans the most. If you can go acquire a Top 4 D, or a legit 3C, that is more than just a band-aid solution, the 1st should 100% be in play.
